Mutifocal cataracts and halo effect

I am facing cataract surgery in one eye. The other eye has no signs yet. I work in HighTech and spend a lot of hours on the computer. In addition, I commute an hour a day in the dark. I also have astigmatism. Could I please get some experiences from people as to whether I should go with a Mono-focal lens with progressive glasses or Multifocal. Thank you very much
Very confused!

Yes, I forgot about the astigmatism correction as he did say he can correct mine as well, though said it is minor. Glad you are seeing better yet, very exciting!  Keep me posted on the 2nd one.  The cyst, I need to learn more on, for sure.  Thank you!

Hi, glad to help if I can. i don't anything about cysts so I can't help there. I am actually going to do the 2nd eye after 2 months. It took me a few days to adjust plus eyedops after the first one so i want to get back to work a bit before I take more down time. I still am seeing improvement after 1 1/2 weeks. BTW. my doctor also partially corrected my astigmatism issue during teh lazer surgery.

This is a copy of my answer in another forum on here, but wanted to say It seems I will also receive the mono lens and manage eyesight somewhat like turtle Joe described above.

"The eye surgeon feels the mono focal is the best option for my eyes.  His comment in not trying to do too much, clarity issues that I - like others have or and could also experience,  along with  the measurements and photos taken on my eyes revealing a retinal cyst on my left eye.  (After leaving, now have more questions on the cyst and if that poses greater risk for another RD or if this cyst is just a result of having the RD in the first place?,?,!). It seems all is clear throughout the explanation, until you walk away and then think of a More Questions!

Are you familiar with the cysts?  He also confirmed I have some loss of vision in my left eye, which my eye doctor had also confirmed.  So is this loss the same as the cyst?

He also feels there will be many upcoming improvements in eye care, and certainly I could be a candidate for one of them.  (Makes me feel good, yet who really wants more surgeries and/or the need to carry around a variety of glasses to adjust to different distances and usages?)

I am able to schedule in 4 weeks and then the very next week for the second eye.

I was hoping to go in within a week or two, but the schedule is full and I am on a waiting list for the 12th of March and the second for two weeks later.

I feel I am ready now, and 4 weeks yet seems long, but I guess it really isn't.

Thank you for all of your help, and for reading my whiney posting!   "

Hi, I decided to go with the mono. The vision in my  eye after the surgery teh next morning was 20/20 for distance. I was concerned that because I often work with 2 computer screens that I woudl have issues with the multifocal. I put in a contact lense to correct my other eye and am using reading glasses from teh drug store to read and use teh computer.

Did you have your surgery?  I am in a similar situation, and trying to make the right decision of the mono or multi... No one wants to give up crisp vision, whether for reading or for distance, much less having difficulty in driving at night.  However, cataract surgery is required for me, and am hoping the right choice becomes a bit more obvious for me!

Curious to see what you decide or did!

The only possible clarification I can make to the previous details is that each of the two mono-focal lens' implanted had a single focal point which was slightly different from each other. With the addition of my use of Progressive Lens Glasses for most activities this single focal point difference does not play a part. Only during activities when I remove my glasses does that situation present one eye taking primary control depending on the distance my eyes are from the viewing surface. e.g. Shaving, working on the computer.

Short, curt answer. 40 years ago my optometrist measured my eyes for contacts even though I made it clear that contacts were never going to happen. My response to his directive was that I had many other hobbies that took up my time and contact use adventures was not one of my choices. My suggestions to you have been clear. Best of luck.

ok, so I took all the information I had gathered and sat with my surgeon this morning.
We decided not to go with the multifocal lens and he does specialize in adjusting the eye to take care of the astigmatism.
So my next question is like this. I have the surgery, and what happens next with working/seeing, etc.
I’ve got glasses that are  multifocal. What do I do for the left eye that now sees far away, but won’t be able to read a computer screen.  My right is not at a point for surgery.
And…how long does it take to get this all synched up properly?
Thanks for all your support here, it is really being helpful!

Thank you so much for staying with me on this. I tend to be leaning towards doing exactly what you did. I also like to keep things simple.

The Snellen eye chart displays line 8 as the 20/20 line. For 5 decades after they invented the device that reads your astigmatism instead of using a slant line board to determine whether you can see the letter C or does it look more like an O on the chart, my Rx was provided to me which allowed me to read line 9. The Eye Doctors and assistants always worked with me to fine tune that sharper line as long as my vision and my brain worked together to clearly determine that sharper Rx. My logical precept of life was and is always to "Keep it simple stupid" or KISS.  I have read many of the followup issues related to Multifocal implants and are thrilled with my choice of monofocal lens in conjunction with progressive eyeglasses which have served and serve me well. While I view my computer screen without my glasses on, if I am reading from notes and typing on the computer, I wear a pair of half frame 2X reading glasses with great COMFORT.
Best regards, Joe

Thank you very much for your response. I am also nearsighted and enjoy reading a book without glasses. The world is moving more and more towards handheld devices so if I only get a monofocal lense for far will that mean that I will need glasses to answer my phone and write an SMS? did you get monofocal inplants? best regards.

Look up some previous posts on multifocal lenses but essentially I would sit with your surgeon an discuss all of the options to make sure you have no regrets afterwards.  Multifocal lenses aren't perfect either so you need to decide having taken all possibilities into account and each situation is unique and has to be addressed by the surgeon.  If your doctor doesn't want to take the time to help you make the best decision, you should seek a second opinion to be sure.

My night vision was not adversely effected after cataract surgery. The only feature I lost with my surgery was the ability to read the teeny tiny numbers on Resistor components which I was able to read without glasses. I am nearsighted.

My personal experience. Had both eyes done 2 weeks apart. One eye was ripe with cataract, other was not so much. My sister only had the effected eye done and has suffered with that alternative choice for 2 years. I use computers for work and play. I have astigmatism which is associated with the cornea shape and remains the same after cataract surgery. My doctor chose two different focal points for the single focus for my eyes. I am sitting here typing on my computer without my progressive lens glasses on. I shave each morning without my glasses on. My cat can now see better in the dark than I can. If I wear my glasses looking at the computer the focus is not sharp as expected. My progressive glasses deliver sharp vision when I drive far off into the distance. My glasses also protect the investment I made in my eyes against damage which was the same reason I never considered contacts throughout my life. Best regards.
