Rare Rapidly Progressive Cataracts

On July 15/08, I was diagnosed having rare, rapidly progressive cataracts (at the back of the lense) by our local Optometrist.  He referred me to an Ophthalmologist.  My appointment is in Sept.  On July 8th, I was still able to drive long distance, but on July 15, it was extremely painful to be exposed to the sun, and nauseating, and my vision was a big blurr.  My vision would get worse on daily basis, esp. after getting out of bed in the morning.  It seemed more clear when I was laying on my back, but putting my head down would almost instantly blurr my vision to the point of not being able to see my shoe laces.  My deapth perception was inaccurate.  It felt as if I had globs of vaseline in my eyes, but nothing was draining.  Prior to this condition my eyes were super dry upon waking. On Aug. 13, I applied Polysporin Eye ointment for two days, and white mucus drained on the first day, but not much on the second day.  However, my vision improved so much. I was able to drive on the 16th of Aug.  However, today, Aug. 17, my vision started to return to that blurr again, but I'm able to tolerate light and no more nausea.  I know for sure, I have cataracts, but I'm wondering whether there is something else, as the Optometriest saw me for a very short time (it is referred to as 'the quick visit'), and should see someone sooner (Sept. was the earliest app. available with the Ophthalmologist), as I am only 55, and it affects my daily life, including my job.
I would be ever so grateful for any input.  Thank you.
Tessa

Dear Tessa

It is not common for cataracts to progress rapidly.  Any sudden change in vision warrants an immediate visit at the eyeMD.   Call the office and let them know this.  Also, to help them, cover one eye and check the vision.  Do this and determine whether there is a difference or it is similar between the two eyes.

Why don't you try calling the ophthalmologist you're scheduled to see in September and describe the symptoms you've been experiencing recently.  If that doctor cannot see you sooner, perhaps they can refer you to another doctor who can.
