Scleral reinforcement, strengthening through cross-linking, is there hope

Just wondering if anyone is considering the scleral reinforcement surgery by B. Ward, or any insight as to how far we are away from scleral strengthening through cross-linking becoming a reality?
I'm 39, myopic (bad eye is -8.5 with 3.75 astigmatism, mild posterior staphyloma, first CNV treated with Avastin a month ago, vision still blurry), (good eye is -4.75 with 1.75 astigmatism, no problems).
I am very concerned about the future of my vision. I've got 5 daughters and I am starting the oldest two on low dose atropine drops (0.01%) to try to prevent this from happening to them.

Scleral reinforcement has not become a widely used technique for a variety of reasons. Althought a few surgeons do a great deal of it most retina surgeons do not do it at all.  While cornea cross linking has revolutionized the treatment of keratoconus it cannot be used in the same manner on the back of the eye to prevent axial elongation.   In addition to low dose atropine try and get your kids outdoors a hour daily.

Thank you for your reply. I wish that some of the old members would comment on how they've been doing since having the scleral reinforcement surgery. Dukey, wmvmustaine, flossy, etc.
You can go to their home page and leave a note or try friending them.  Many no longer post here.
