So called "Premium Intraocular Lens only 7% of market"

Although so called "premium' IOLs were introduced in 2003 and highly touted to eliminate the need for glasses after cataract/IOL surgery they have failed to deliver on their claims and only 7% of patients having cataract surgery elect to spend the often substantial amount of out of the pocket money to 'upgrade'  form a standard high quality aspherical monofocal IOL.  The only premium extra cost IOL that has low cost, low complication rate, superior optics is the 'toric' IOLs for correcting astigmatism.  Lots of pressure in many offices to "upgrade" to high cost premium IOLs.  Most patients having these IOLs still need glasses for some things, many are dissatisfied with the night vision and complication rates and dissatisfaction considerably higher than standard IOLs.   More postings here on MedHelp.org eye forum about premium IOL problems than monofocal IOL problems.

Thank you for your honesty.  10 months after electing the "premium" IOL, I continue to have issues that affect my daily life.  Were I to have a "re-do", I would stick with my glasses.

As I have said I would not choose one if I needed surgery, did not choose one when my wife had surgery last year, and I see a significant number of unhappy people post op because is specialize in 2nd opinions.   Toric okay. Rest asking for a totally altered risks/benefit/cost equation
Bsj74 - I hope your issues can be resolved in time.  The good news is that the technology is always changing and maybe a solution will come your way soon.

It's only been one week since my cataract surgery (side effect of a vitrectomy) and so many people questioned my decision to go with a near distance lens.   Of course, I would have loved to have gotten a lens that allowed me to see without glasses, but I didn't want a procedure done on my other eye if it wasn't needed.  Plus I've always worn glasses/contact lenses for distance sight so I figured I should go with what I'm used to.  I can see really clearly about 11-12 inches out and both eyes seems to be in sync with each other again.  At the four week mark I'll receive a new eyeglass prescription and, hopefully, find a really cool new pair glasses to wear.
