Using newly prescribed glasses for reading at arm's length

I got a new pair of glasses against nearsightedness (so I can see better at a distance). It's strength is -5.50 or so.
The thing is, I most often do stuff that needs a good vision at close range, e.g. reading a screen, typing, so office work.
Question is, will reading at this close range with the glasses intended for distances "damage" my eyes? So will my eyes get lazy or "overcorrected" as I look at close targets with the strong glasses?
Truth be told, I was using the old glasses for reading or anything close range, but it's focus is not for my eyes anymore, it made my eyes strain even when using artificial tears.
Thanks~

What is your age. Whether you get glasses or not (and not many people can function without glasses with -5.50 myopia your ability to focus will decline as you get older and in your early to mid 40's you will either need to take your glasses off and hold a book very close or go to progressive multifocal glasses. this is normal and is called 'presbyopia"   At near you can either wear your glasses or take them off but most people as mypic as you don't like getting that close to book or computer screen

Thanks for the answer. I'm 23.
You probably think you'll never be 45 but it will be here before you know it.   At near glasses on or off whichever you like. At distance you can't see well enough to drive without them.  Prolonged near work increases myopia so look up from your reading or computer every 15 minutes and focus out the window and blink 5-8 times. Dry eyes also very common with computer use.
So you say it doesn't matter if I have the stronger (and with better focus) glasses on or the old weaker (with the bad focus) when reading at arm's length, what matters is if I look up from time to time?
In single vision glasses like you wear the glasses RX (-5.50) is set to distances of 20 ft/6m and further.  For things closer than that you own eye muscle does the work of focusing.   If your old glasses were say -4.50 diopter your distance vision >6 meter will be much better with the new glasses but at near computer and read the undercorrected -1.50 diopters actually helps you and lessens the work of reading.   What most people do is wear the new glasses all the time.  Older people age 35-42 might wear the weaker glasses for near as it is less work for the very weak middle age eye focus muscle.
Thanks for the advice.
I was just unsure if I should read that up close with the strong glasses
