Vision Distortion after retinal detachment surgery

Hi,
My mom is 62 and she just went through a terrible surgery detachment surgery 7 weeks ago. The type  of the surgery was silicone oil as  the gas did not work. After the surgery my mom was extremely in pain for a few days that she could not even sleep. Right now after 7 weeks of the surgery, before the surgery, the vision of the eye was 9/10 but now it is not even 1/10, all my mom can see with that left eye is fingers within 2m, the colours is not very clear and the worst is vision distortion, everything is taller and thinner as she tell me so. The doctor said that her macula was partly affected. As i live in Vietnam, the medical treatment here is not very good so i dont know what to do if there is something can be done to help my mom's eye getting better. Those are the questions i highly appreciate if somebody can give me the answers:
1. is there any solution to the vision distoration.
2. which medicine is good for pation after retinal detachment after surgery.
3. is there any preventive method for the other eye.
thank you so very much!

1. visual distortions are very common, almost always present if the RD is "Macula off".  After surgery it is usually better but often permanent. You can use the search feature and archives to reaed about this problem. There are many posts on it.
2. The medications that are used while RD surgery is healing are antibiotic drops, steroid drops, non inflammatory drops, dilation drops. You will need to discuss your situation with your surgeons.
3. The "other eye" is the most important eye and has a high risk of RD which varies between as low as 2% to as high as 20%. So she should live a healthy lifestyle (not smoke, watch weight, good diet, exercise in moderation, see her MD to check for hi blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, etc), avoid activities that involve increased risk of eye injury.  Wear glasses that will protect both eyes, see an Eye MD ophthalmologist every 6-12 months.  SUPPLEMENTS;  This will reduce the risk of age related macular degeneration:  diet of lots of vegetrables, fruits, nuts, berries, fiber and low in fat, processed carbohydrates and wheat containing food.  Take a good multivitamin, 2-4 omega 3 capsules of water based product (fish oil, kreel oil, calamari derived), and 10-20 mgm of lutein.

You are at higher risk of RD due to your mom's condition. You should consider doing the same as your brothers and sisters. RD occurs in about 1 in 5K to 7000 people who have not had cataract surgery and do not have extreme risk factors such as high myopia and positivie family HX. After successful cataract/IOL surgery risk is 1 in 2500-4000.
