What cause's fluid to build up behind retina?

I have a black dot in my central vision of left eye, with blurred vision, flashes/strobes of lights and wavy lines in vision.  I was being treated by Retina & Macula specialist and has a series of injections in my eye...with no success.  They have finally determined that there isn't anymore that can be done as they do not know the cause.  That is may go away on it's own or it could lead to blindness.  These treatments have been going on for over a year and my vision is getting worse.  They stated that I do not fit the criteria for Wet Macular Degeneration Disease.

By now you (and your ophthalmologists) should have a much better understanding of why your problem developed and especially the implications for the same thing developing in your "good" eye.  I would do two things.  1. Ask for a copy of your medical records and review them.  Every visit will have the working diagnosis. So there should be a working diagnosis on your bad eye.    There should also be a reason for the injections. They are used for either swelling (edema) or abnormal blood vessels (Neovacularization).     2. Get a second opinion from another group of retina/macula Eye MDs about diagnosis, treatment and potential for the RE to develop the problem.   This is extremely important.
