blacking out?

Driving down the road on a long road trip, suddenly my eyes got dim, my ears started ringing, I had a tingling sensation almost like I had just stood up, and it felt like I was holding my breath (pressurized sinuses).  I forced myself to try to calm down breathing in and out though it was freaky.  After about 10 or 20 seconds I guess, things became normal.

What in the world might that have been?  My blood pressure is normal though on the trip with 2 dogs and a Mother-in-law (and a wife who does not like road trips) it was probably stressful.  Had felt a little tightness in chest the evening before but figured that could be tension or eating food on the road (subway) (there was bad thunderstorm part way through the first 8 hrs of the drive).

A transient ischemic attack could do that. See your personal physician for evaluation.

Really not a question for an eye forum, but in my opinion you should see your doctor for a checkup, preferably including a thalium stress test to check the condition of your heart and blood vessels.  It could have simply been triggered by anxiety, but such phenomena are frequently caused by reduced blood flow to the brain.  You need to get it checked out.
