senior amblyopia and being told I cannot have both very nearsighted and farsighted in one prescription

I am 62 years old and was diagnosed with amblyopia at 8 years of age.  I had an eye test a few weeks ago.  The optometrist told me I have had a drastic difference in my eyes this year.  I was also told that I cannot have an eyeglass prescription that will accommodate both my farsightedness and will also give me the magnification I need for computer work.  I am questioning the optometrist and her diagnosis.

Please get a second opinion with an ophthalmologist.  You may be developing cataracts which have changed your prescription.
