Exercise after IUI??

I had my IUI three and four days ago (2/25 and 2/26) and my doctor suggested not exercising for 7-10 days after. When i asked him why, he couldn't give me a strong answer. Said something about keeping my heart rate normal. I generally exercise regularly and feel like it probably helps during the dreaded 2WW!! Does anyone know if there is any risk in exercising during the 2ww?  Thanks!!

Hi there. I understand your concerns pretty well. I was sailing in the same boat at a time. I'm an IVF'er, so our cases differ. But the point is that they advise having more rest after procedures to minimize possible risks.  After ET my Dr told me some moderate exercising is ok unless it's intensive.  And of course no sex on following days.  In your case exercising is rather a routine, this makes me think your body got used to it (like sportwomen's), so it's not going about ''risks''. Still to  keep rest of mind, I'd exercise, but less than usual. Moreover it helps you to feel emotionally well. (2ww is not a bed of roses). I'm currently in the 3rd trimester after being treated overseas. The only thought that is coming to my head again and again is that there are so many other couples which cannot come for their children now, because of closed borders. I've recently read the clinic is currently taking care of 35 babies born via surrogacy. Their parents have no idea when they'll be able to come and take them home..This is so strange and wierd... No one has ever expected such a situation could happen..
Anyway, I'm wishing everybody her best on the way.
@Jen, hope to hear some excellent news from you soon.

Hi Poncho 39, so how many days did your acupunturist told you to wait after IUI/IVF? I am currently trying to conceive naturally & the last time I visited my TCM physician, she said I could exercise after ovulation as it does not affect potential pregnancy.

My acupuncturist said not to exercise, either. I asked why and she said that 1) raising the body temperature can kill sperm and 2) you need to wait until implantation occurs to resume workouts. She also said to no to work too hard and rest lots. This woman had helped 3 people I know conceive so I believe her and am following her advice.

I'm so confused beause my doctor told me running/swimming/biking/ weight lifting...whatever I normally do is okay even immediately after my IUIs. I train pretty hard and pretty often (upwards of 15+ hours a week) for triathlons and my doctor even indicated that could be part of my problem with irregular periods and lack of ovulation. HOWEVER, when talking about doing a hilly and hot 1/2 ironman (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run) 9 days after my IUI, he said he doesn't think there should be any problem. He says to do it. Am I crazy for doubting him? I'm 38 and have been doing triathlons for years...but have only been trying to get pregnant during this past year.

Thanks for the feedback. Maybe I'll just wait the 7-10 days post IUI.

I was advised to only walk and moderately at that.  Every time I went back to heart rate pumping exercising after an IUI or IVF, I did not get pregnant.  This time, the only I did was walk and not in a gym and I got pregnant. I've heard that exercise can take blood away from the uterus and that's where we need lots of blood to get pregnant.  I'm not planning to hit a gym again until after the 1st trimester.  For now, I just walk and try to eat right. You won't get fat if you do those things and your body won't go to waste either.

Thank you for this. I’m post second IUI and while I was advised I can get back to regular exercise after 24hours, I’m taking it easy this time around, just easy walking until I test. I can’t help but wonder if the first time didn’t take because I only waited a week then went back to normal workouts (running, boot camps, etc..). It’s all so crazy!
Hey Nnew4.  What we can do and what we want to do are different, right?  When I have been trying for baby (and it was proving difficult), I also changed my exercise routine.  I was also underweight.  I went ahead and allowed myself to put on a few pounds. That was a big deal then for me to do that but I do think it helped.  Being too thin or too heavy impacts fertility.  Anyway, when do you find out if you have been successful with the transfer?!

my doctor told me you could go back to your normal rountine the next day after the IUI?
I guess I should really ask if exercising is ok since I recently started going back to the gym too!

That's interesting.  I always get back to  my routine about 1 or 2 days later.  My dr. hasn't mentioned anything about not excersizing.  But, I haven't asked him either.  I'll have to ask at my next visit.

I was told the same thing but didn't have iui, just a trigger shot. She said it was because the twisting or hard impact could bend or cause tension on the fallopian tubes. I am seven days past trigger shot and did a dance class tonight, thinking it was ok and I have to say that there was a lot of pulling and uncomfortableness. Our bodies are so complex; it could be so many things!
