How many follicles for IUI?

Which of you had more than 2 follicles before IUI? Did your doc give an opinion one way or the other about whether you should proceed given the risk of multiples? Anyone respond too well to 50 mg of clomid (10-11 follicles) but more normally when clomid was reduced (1-2 follicles)?

Clomid also made my lining really thin.  I took estrogen vaginal pills for the weeks after they realized that I had such a thin lining.  It helped within a couple days usually.

As far as the clomid, I did not respond well on it at all... I was all the way up to 150 MG and only ever had 1 follicle, maybe 2 ONCE.

I moved onto injectables the last 2 cycles and responded a lot better.  This time I had at least 3, ir not 4 or 5 follicles, and they didn't tell me that I couldn't proceed, but we did the IUI a little earlier than normal (day 13 I think) b/c they didn't want to give the other follies time to catch up and mature.

Best of luck to you!

Thanks for your reply.  It's amazing what different positions everyone's REs have.  I can understand your argument for continuing with so many follicles since you didn't have success with 5.  This was my first cycle on Clomid and I have around 10 or 11 follicles, 4 being the right size and 2 more being close.  Since we have never tried IUI before, we decided to pass this round and try a lower dose with the hope that we'll get fewer follicles next time.  My lining was also thin so that wasn't ideal either.  We're hoping that cutting the 50 mg pill in half will help reduce the # of follicles and help the lining thicken up too.  I suppose if that works and we don't conceive, we could always increase the clomid again and proceed with 5 or 6 follicles.  It will be a tough decision though, b/c reduction is not an option for us.  Thanks for your help!  Best wishes.

Thanks.  I'm praying the IUI works.  When you did IVF, how many embryos did you transfer? Do they want you to transfer as many as possible or is it like IUI in that they stick to 3 or 4?  Glad to hear you've conceived.  Congrats!

That is what my RE said we'd do (cut the 50 mg pill in 1/2).  My lining was also thinner than they wanted so I'm thinking that might have been due to the clomid as well.  These decisions are so hard.  On one hand you think great, my chances are even better, but on the other hand multiples would be a scary reality.  Thanks for your response. I have a better idea of what to hope for now.  My RE didn't really give me any indication of what they were hoping to find, so this helps.

My MD reduced my clomid dose to 25 mg after I had very strong response and very thin lining on 50 mg. I still got the 50 mg pills (that is the lowest dose they make) but had to cut them in half. On 25 mg I had 3 mature folls each time for 3 cycles. Did not get pg, likely bc clomid thinned my lining, so am switching to injectables. Hope I will not overrespond on those. They did say ok to proceed with 3 folls but they normally counsel not to proceed with >3 folls. My RE practice is very conservative about risk of multiples, though. Good luck to you!

Out of the last 5 cycles, there were 2 where I had 5+ follies, one of them being this current cycle where I ended up with 5 or 6 and possibly as many as 8. The rest I had 2-3. My RE was fine with allowing me to continue with IUI especially when I reminded him that I already had a failed cycle with 5 follies. The only question he asked is if I conceived more than twins if I would consider reducing.Btw- I believe 50 mg is the lowest dose they give for clomid. I took 100 and was a good responder with about 3 follies but I wanted to be more aggresive so we added follistim to the clomid.

My clinic shoots for about 4 for an IUI cycle; that seems to be showing highest pregnancy rates I guess. Clomid didn't work for me, but when I was switched to injectibles, I always over-responded and had many many follicles, which of course is not good due to the high risk of multiples. In the end, I went for an IVF and it worked! Best wishes :)
