IUI First time and sperm quality

I just had an IUI procedure on 30MAY08 and am hoping for good results.  I responded well and had four 'eggs' at 17-20.  The only issue right now...or rather what I am concerned about is his sperm motility.  It was at 2% last time tested...and according to our Dr. it was about 5% this time.  I am thinking that this is going to impede our chances of getting preg. but wanted to see if anyone else out there had dealt with the same issue and still been successful.  May consider IVF if this doesn't take...but the cost is a real factor.

Thanks for the reply.  I am still hopeful that it will work...will just have to wait and see.  Still wondering if anyone out there has experienced our issues and still were able to get preg.

Well we like to see >1 million total motile which is possible with a poor sample if it is processed well.  Some clumping is not totally abnormal and the washing will clear most of that way.  I hope it goes well for you -- it sounds like your doc is really using a comprehensive approach.  We always try to do IUI's before IVF because it works for some patients and saves them a LOT of money!  GL!

The prepared the sperm before the IUI...getting the non-motile sperm out, etc.  There was some clumping due to sperm antiboties (spl) as well.  Not sure what the total motile was though...didn't know to ask that.  I had IVF attempted a few years back...but was by a Dr. who did not chance his protocol at all...and wasn't being treated for my PCOS at that time either.  Now I am being treated for that...and my Dr. took a less agressive approach for this re-try.  They said that the IVF most likely didn't work before due to my PCOS.  Oh...and I hyperstimulated three times when I tried those IVFs as well.  I am still hopeful...just not sure how realistic it is that this will work.

When they prepped the sample for IUI did they process it?  If they did you should ask what the final motility was.  We prep our sperm and it highly increases motility by decreasing total concentration (weeding out non-motile sperm).  If it was only 5% after that -- but the total motile was over 1 million, we would still proceed with the IUI.  Try not to get too stressed.  GL!
