STD Fertility Question

Good morning doctors,

I would appreciate some advice / reassurance with regard to my situation – I have read too much miss information on google, I’m confused and feel like I’m going round in circles.

I’m a man, 34 years old, I’ve been with my partner (now wife) for 5 years and married for 2 years. We’ve been trying for a child for a couple of years and despite our efforts we haven’t conceived (my sperm has been tested an I’m fine). This situation is very stressful for us and I’m try to eliminate any potential causes before we have to pay thousands on IVF treatment.

Over the past month I have started reading the fertility pages of this website and found out that on some occasions sexual infections such as chlamydia & gonorrhoea can be carried without knowing and can lead to fertility issues. Like most people I had other sexual partners before I met her (I was in the Armed forced and single for a while before meeting her). I have recently started to worry that I may have carried a sexual infection into our relationship without knowing, which may have caused our complications.

As you can appreciate, we are already stressed out and I don’t want to breach this conversation with my wife because it may cause trust issues in my marriage (I’ve been faithful and confident she has). We have a great relationship but hit a wall with this fertility issue. I am trying to eliminate ALL potential problems before we spend thousands on IVF treatment.

For reassurance, I decided conduct a full sexual health screen (very expensive) last week without my wife knowing (I have no intentions of telling her). I tested negative for everything and was very relieved.

Q1: Am I correct in assuming that my wife will be clear of any sexual infections due to my negative test results?

Q2: If either us had an infection, surely over the last five years we would have passed it back and forward, which would have resulted in symptoms and a positive test?

I want to eliminate this from my mind so I can enjoy xmas with my wife. I would appreciate your help.

Thank you.

Btw.  Not a doc here.  Just base on experienced on what test that me n my hub had to go through.  If the tubes are blocked, the doc will proceed to tell you whats the next step.  If she has scar tissues, a laparoscopy surgery could be done to remove those.

Did you get tested on semen analysis.  If not maybe you wanna do that.  Your wife could go do the hsg test.  Hsg test is to check if her tubes are blocked or not.  That be a good step before taking any meds.
