Undergoing 2 month depo lupron treatment for endo and wondering if that's enough time?

I like many of you was very hesitant on having this shot.  I’m in the midst of IVF and have undergone two IVF cycles that have failed.  I’m 32 years old and have never been treated for endometriosis although I have complained about painful periods ever since I can remember.  My IVF specialist suggested that I go for another round of IVF, but I suggested that perhaps a test could be done to test my lining.  To my surprise he thought that was a great idea and said that most patients that have endometriosis generally lacked BETA 3 protein, which makes it virtually impossible for the egg to attach to the lining.  Why had I not heard of this before???  You would think this would be a test that is talked about up front!  I am disappointed to say the least that I had to bring this up, but I think now days most patients need to educate themselves so they can take a proactive approach on their health.  The test is called E-Tegrity and is very painful.  The test came back negative and I was indeed lacking this hormone.  That in a way was great to find out, finally an answer to my problems!  I am on day 19 of depo lupron treatment (1 shot a month for two months) and have been doing well thus far.  I do have to say that I am struggling with insomnia, yeast infections, weight gain and restlessness.  My fertility doctor only wants to treat me for 2 months and then undergo another IVF cycle.  I’m worried that this is not enough time to treat the endo.  I want the highest chance possible of becoming pregnant.  My OBGYN said that most treatments go for 6 months.  I’m asking for any help, is two months of treatment two short to treat endometriosis?

Hi, Will keep you posted.  I did have my lining checked and it was so thin it was hard to find on the ultrasound, so I'm assuming it worked.  There is no test to check unfortuantely and the only way I'll know if my lining grew back with the Beta 3 protien is if I get pregnant, here is hoping for that!!!  In the midst of it right now and will find out tomorrow when they will be placing the embryos is.  I can't wait, really hope that 3rd time is the charm for us :)  Take care and I hope to have good news for you soon!  Good luck with your doctor and just stay focused :)  God Bless.

Hi, I'm 35 years old with severe stage IV Endometriosis. I have had 2 laparoscopies to remove ovarian cysts and severe endo. My last surgery took place just last week in which a grapefruit sized cyst was removed from my right ovary, and my right tube was removed as well due to the damage from the cyst. Due to all this, our doctor says that she recommends we do IVF as soon as possible. She initially suggested only 1 month of lupron before starting the IVF stimulation because there is such a fine line between too much supression and not enough - the worry is that too much lupron suppression will be detrimental to getting the ovaries to stimulate properly once the drugs are started. I am just so confused by all of this, because I want to maximize my chances, but have usually read about people with endo doing 2-3 cycles of lupron before they start IVF. I'll be anxious to see if your IVF cycle works for you after the 2 months of lupron (off course, you probably aren't dealing with such a severe case of endo!). There are just so many factors involved in all of this, it is definitely frustrating! I'm glad you mentioned the test for the lining, I have not heard of that, and will definitely ask my doctor. Good Luck !!

Thanks so much for you feedback.  I will look into the CA125 test, this is great information.  Not sure how I have avoided having the laparsocopy for this long, but I'm really glad to finally be treating the endo.  Wishing you well on your journey - good luck!

Hi. I agree with you that we need to educate ourselfs, it is SO true. Usually treatments with lupron are between 3 or 6 months, but maybe your doctor thinks 2 months will be enough. I have done two 6-months rounds, the first in 2005 without a laparoscopy and then a second round in 2009 with laparsocopy, from my experience, this last time I used it, I guess because it was combined with the lap, it helped me SO much with the pain, since my cycle return, I've had 4 cycles pain free! no med, no nothing....we haven't conceived yet, don't know if I ever will , but we are still trying. One last thing, a CA125 test, which is just a blood test, can also be used to determine if you are suffering from endo, although to be 100% sure you do need the laparoscopy. Oh,and I did feel a few of the side effects you mention, for me the hot flashes and the weight gain was the worst, but I was able to tolerate it. Good luck with your journey!
