Varying Results

Has anyone ever heard of wildly varying results in a sperm test? DH got a 70million per mil with everything looking normal when our GP ordered a test, but when our fertility specialist ordered one, the results said 1 million, with only 9% normal appearance.

it's left him quite devastated as you can imagine. Anybody hear of anything like this?

I just wanted to wish you lots of luck!  As far as the SA goes, they can definitely fluctuate, so tell DH not to worry yet.  I'm sure that everything will be OK.  Just to be safe, does he take a multivitamin with zinc and selenium?  How about extra vitamin C?  I've heard these things can really help those little swimmers!

Good for you that you fought for what you wanted and are going to get proper care.  It's a shame that some of these doctors don't care about what is best for their patients.  I just had an experience where my OBGYN refused to refer me to a specialist for more testing because "you just need to accept that sometimes infertility is unexplained."  It was heartbreaking, but we're not giving up either.  All the best to you!  :)

Good job!! A nonbiased center is much better! I hope you get great results and please do not let a doc scare you into treatment! HUGS!!!

The third test are being done in another State! we are driving over to Queensland for four weeks and have lined up with a fertility centre over there to do the test. They've asked that we bring the results from the previous two tests for comparison...

We can afford the wait. Even if we got the test done at the next opportunity (we won't get to a larger town for another week) we wouldn't get the results until we are on holidays and unable to do anything about it until we got back.

I KNEW IT!! QUACK DOC!! HAHA!! My conspiracy theory is probably right!! I swear some people should never be in the medical field and instead work at McDonalds where they don't have to use their pea brains! Let us know when you get the results - did you get the results done at the same doc or a new doc?

well I found out that not only does this RE not have kids, but that someone else has had a bad experience. I'm sure you girls will appreciate this one.... she said to this girl "eventually you will come to terms with your infertility and will get over your desire to have a baby".

We have gotten hold of the clinic manager and have had a winge session with her and feel much better. We are going to continue to try and conceive naturally until we get the results of the third test.

We will use her scientific knowledge when the time comes to need it, but her advice is for the birds... we will contact the clinic manager for that!

My RE has no kids and apparently (she is older) doesn't ever want any...makes me think she doesn't understand enough to do everything in her power - despite the thousands of tears I am sure she has seen. It is possible that she went into this field because she couldn't get pregnant - but she doesn't strike me as that "momma" type...you know?

I totally agree with scienceteacher and I havent been doing this that long but I have that thought in my head everytime I had an appt because I know that they are going to try and push me to do something that I cannot afford just to make a buck I guess. I wish that I could find a RE thats in my position so that I could feel like I'm getting the best care that I could possibly get because she would know exactly what me or the next person is going threw.

Oh... I'm quite happy to pick up your conspiracy baton and run with it...
She didn't want to talk about other treatments, as I'm "not getting any younger" (Thanks, yes, I know that) so we shouldn't muck around.... and make a decision.

Gosh.... how about letting hubby swallow what you've just told us..

as for what DH wears... sometimes it's matter of getting him to wear something in addition to a sarong... so I don't think that is a problem.

Good luck Sarah, It doesn't look I'll need clomid as my O is apparently not the problem, but it doesn't sound like much fun at all!

I'm trying to convince DH to take the test ASAP as not being certain is messing him up a bit.

I find that when IVF is pushed by the doc (A lot of money in IVF!) I tend to think there is a "fudging" of the report. I am not saying your doc is doing that but that is a HUGE discrepancy. The doc may be making something out of nothing just to get you to do IVF faster than you normally would. I am a believer in "people do what they want to do to get others to do what they want them to do". I feel liek the whole fertility buisness thing is like plastic surgery - they can charge what they want because people will pay. You don't ever hear of someone walking into a Plastic surgeons office and them saying "oh, no - you are perfect, you don't need anything done" because then they wouldn't get paid. So, I still think (here goes my conspiracy theory rant - as my DH puts it)  that RE's don't always do everything they can to help people get pregnant beause once you are pregnant, your business goes elsewhere (to the OB) and they are out the thousands you would have paid them for a month's treatment. My RE tried the IVF talk and I stopped her in her tracks. WE got pregnant with shots last year and m/c but she still wanted to say "you should be pregnant by now" - well, duh? And she did talk us into another sperm analysis so I am sure it will come back "weird" since she is pushing the IVF so hard even though DH was fine a year ago. Fine enough to get me pregnant!! :) I hope I didn't drive you crazy - just my 2 cents! :) Good luck - and I would definately repeat the test (especially if you can go to another clinic not associated with the RE!!!!).

My DH had only 9% but the doc didn't seem to concerned with us as the way he said it was that it only takes just one healthy one to make it and that one will weed out the bad ones. He also said there are factors that can cause a low count. Does your DH wear long johns or stuff to make the scrotum hot, that can cause a bad count. We are on our first round of clomid, so hoping! Hope this helps!

Thanks, we are having a third test done, but living 500km (310 miles) from the nearest testing centre means that it's probably going to sit on his mind for a while, so knowing that it happens to others is helpful. There is also the hope that it is an "off" day (Thanks Heather...)

It was a phone consult and the RE was really pushing the IVF thing - so it was quite disconcerting...

It might just have been a one-time thing. It's not abnormal to have an "off" day, so to speak. But like the other said, it probably would be a good idea to repeat the test one more time. Best of luck!

I agree - my dh had a widely varying results as well - 4 million in the 1st one and 75 in the 2nd.  Have the RE's clinic repeat the test and much luck!

Was it two different tests? Kruger and something else (can't remember the name!)? Different tests measure differently. Call the clinics and see specifically what tests DH took. If they were the same, I would get the RE to do another one - if that comes back low, something might be up with the RE. Good luck!
