You could do a frozen cycle IF when you did your first IVF cycle, you produced enough follicles and enough of them made it.  Basically, you start off by going through all the stimulation to produce follicles.  Some people have difficulty with that and only produce 1 or 2 if any.  Other respond well with 15 or so and yet others go beyond that with 30 or 40.  And of course, there's everything in between.
It is generally accepted that around 15 or so is very good.
After the follicles are fertilised, some will make it and some won't.
Too few to start with and you could end up with none to transfer.
Equally, many doctors believe that too many isn't good.
Some feel that many follicles means they aren't as good quality as they would have been if you'd had fewer and others feel that too many is too un-natural and puts your body under too much hormonal stress which could negatively affect implantation of an embryo.
So, to give you an example, my last cycle, we had 19 or 20 follicles.  Not all follicles contain eggs but this time, mine did... we got 19 or 20 eggs.  They were fertilised.  Some will simply not fertilise.  I think I ended up with 14 that fertilised.  Then you wait at least a couple of days to see if they will continue to grow.  And finally, you see what quality the embryos are.  I ended up with 7 perfect (Type-1, 8-cell) embryos as well as some of lesser quality.  When you have good quality ones, the lesser quality ones are normally ignored because they generally don't freeze well.  But with 7 good quality ones, we transferred 4 and we froze 3.  My last try (before this one), I had 14 follicles and we ended up with 3 Type-1, 8-cell embryos and transferred the 3 so I had nothing left to freeze and so when that didn't work, yes, I had to start from the very beginning.
Just so you know, they are now able to test embryos for chromosomal abnormalities prior to transfer and this would help eliminate the ones that don't stand a chance so you only transfer the ones, that all things being equal, ARE able to implant and be carried to term.
I hope that helps.

Wow!  My husband and I have been inquiring about IVF but, I am so afraid that we will spend all of that money and still not have a successful pregnancy.  Our problem is that my husband has translocated chromosomes.  Only 30% of his sperm is healthy.  If we had the IVF and it did not work the first time then would the next step be the FET or would I have to go through a whole other cycle of IVF?

FET is a Frozen Embryo Transfer, basically you have already done IVF but have some good frozen eggs to choice from. It really is nice compared to IVF, the only meds I have taken is an estrogen pill every morning and night and a pregestrone insert in the morning and at night. There are no shots no Puregon, Meopur, Follistim, HCG, nothing. I was stunned at how little stressful this was and how little preperation was needed for the FET.

May I ask what's involved?  I've done four round sof IVF but never an FET.
My doctor talked baout it doing it as a natural cycle, which I understand means no meds.  But what I don't understand is what's the alternative for FET??  I mean, it' snot as if you'd be stimming since you already have the embryos.  So you wouldn't be doing any Puregon or Menopur or Follistim any of those.  Do you do HCG shots??
Thanks so much.

We did the IVF in December and transferred 2 and it didn't work, so we decided on three this time. We had six left over 8 cell embryos that is why we did not go with the fresh cycle. We already had so many good ones to choice from.

When the doc's office thawed the eggs, in one of the embryos the cells starting dieing off so we decided to thaw one more egg so we would have three healthy embryos to transfer.

When we got there to do the transfer they were like the egg that was looking bad grew by two cells last night and we would like to go ahead and put in as well. Of course by then I am not thinking clearly and said sure why not put another one in there :-o  It does sort of scare me now but that okay.

Multiples run in my family, my husband is a twin, my sister has twins, I have twin cousins, and triplet cousins.  so I pretty much know what to expect if several do take but if only one takes I am okay with that too.

I just did a FET a couple of weeks ago.  We chose to transfer only one so as to avoid the risks that sometimes come with multiple births.  (single embryo transfer if you want to google it -- very popular in Europe)   I got a BFP just days ago, but now I am bleeding so I'm afraid of the worst.  However, I would still recommend going with only one (in our case a blastocyst) if your situation looks promising.  My doctor gives us a 50/50 shot with each transfer.

Can I ask why you did so many FETs?  I mean, is it that each time you did a fresh cycle that didn't work but had embryos left over so you did the frozen cycle and two of three frozen cycles did work?  Or were you aiming for FET from the get go for some reason?

I have had FETs and never been told anything about cells
in 07 I had FET doc said the embies don't look "great"  but we'll see - only put two back and had twins
in 07 late put two back - one looked bad - had a miscarriage
in 08 - for the first time in 6 transfers was told # of cells - two 8s and a 7 - and am 18 weeks with twins

Wow... I've only been trying for about a year so not nearly as long as you.  But we've already been through 4 IVF cycles and seeing as I'm 36 and Dh is 56, we're in a bit of a hurry!  I think the hardest part for us is that we tought it would be easy because this is purely because DH had a vasectomy 23 years ago and, as far as we know, I have no problem so we don't understand why it's not working.
I really hope and pray this works for you.  You know, it doesn't matter how faint the line is.  If it's there and you've had no HCG then there's something going on!

I was told everything was perfect the 1st time we did IVF, I was really disappointed when it didn't work.

This time with FET, I had a 9 Cell, 8Cell, 8Cell, and a 6Cell Implanted. I am truely hoping that one of them takes.

Since I am not on any HCG this time I took a First Response test this morning it says yes but the line is really faint. Maybe I will take another one tomorrow, or wait for my test on Wednesday.

Best if luck Magda_S, I will keep you in my prayers. It is so hard to wait when you are truely ready to be a mom. Hope long have you been trying, we have been trying since 2000.

I've actually heard and read mixed reviews of FETs however, I heard something very interesting recently and since I heard it the first time, I heard it again and again from different people.  It seems that some doctors believe, from their experience, that for some women, the stims actually prevent implantation.  In this case, you're actually better off with a FET as it gives your body time to get rid of all the stims.
I have just had my 4th failed IVF despite being told (for the 4th time) that everything is perfect.  Thankfully, this time, we have 3 "perfect" frozen embryos and I'm praying that the FET we do in August will prove worth waiting for.
Sorry I couldn't give you anything more concrete but I hope this helps.

Thanks ;-)

Although I've never done IVF, I have heard that a FET has the same success rate as a fresh cycle. Some doctors even say it has a slightly better chance, since your body is not under as much stress (less meds, procedures, etc.).
