what happens next?? just had first u/s

Hey all...i just had my first u/s yesterday at 6w5d - things look good so far!  The only thing that confuses me is that the u/s tech said she'd see me again around week 20...and not to worry if my doctor can't hear the baby's heartbeat in his office for another 6 weeks.  As far as I know the doctor isn't planning on ordering anymore bloodwork - so I just sit here for the next six weeks not knowing anything...what if something goes wrong and i don't find out for 6 weeks?!?  I don't get it!

Don't worry, Sally...this is how it is when you finally get pg! All the drama of the past few months, the ups and downs, the disappointments, the huge rush when you get the BFP - so you get your U/S and then - nothing! Well, honey that's because you're off the rollercoaster now and you have to just sit back and let it happen!

If it's a normal pregnancy, ie unless there are any high risk factors (you're an older Mom over 35, you have a history of more than 3 mc's) then you sit back, wait 9 months and then have a baby!Having said that, though, you will need to be monitored regularly and the baby's heartbeat checked so you need to talk to your regular doctor about where you will be getting your pre-natal care.

I don't know exactly how pre-natal care works over there but here in England, at 10 weeks pg you get to see your midwife, then every 2 to 4 weeks until nearer the end, when you go every week; she will check your urine for sugar & protein and after about week 12 will start to listen out for & let you hear the baby's heartbeat.

The 20 week scan will be more detailed - they will take some critical measurements of the baby to check his/her development & confirm your due date and you will see how well-developed your baby is at that time (and find out the sex if you want to) but otherwise you just sit back and let Nature take its course!

Congrats to you...go and talk to your doc about pre-natal care and don't worry. Once you feel that baby start to move at around 18weeks, you won't need anyone to tell you you're ok, you will have that extra reassurance every day right there inside!
