what to do with a doctor who treats patient badly?

I recently had to change pain management doctors due to insurance change and the new dr I saw was so aweful he reduced me to tears. he spent the first few minutes telling me he was very mean and like Dr. House from tv.  He then told me he was an interventionalist and all he wanted to do was surgery on herniated disc in lumbar spine.  i explained that was a 15 yr old injury and did not want surgery. I told him the fibromyalgia and CFS and herniated disc in neck was a more pressing problem. His answer was "do you know what fibromyalgia is? It is a diagnosis of non diagnosis and an excuse to blow smoke up your skirt because no one knows what is wrong with you. It is total ******** and I dont even want to hear it--it doesnt exist! Your choices with me are morphine, fentanyl, oxycontin and surgery for lumbar.!" " Medications like vicodin are addicting and I am not a pill mill--i wont prescribe them!"  i asked him if he feels morphine, and oxy are not addicting then?  "Not when I give them--anyway I am going to do surgery on lumbar anyway."  he then wrote 3 prescriptions, threw them in the folder, and sent me to the front desk--the scripts were for flexeril, MRI, and gabapentin. I explained to the nurse that I cant take flexeril or gabapentin and she responded "so let me get this straight--the DR needs to run the prescriptions by you first? He IS the DR you know!"  I told her yes he did if he wants me to take them--I get a say in my treatment!  I waited another 30 mins to speak to the dr. again (now 2 1/2 hrs total) and he said--"that is all you are getting from me-come back in 2 weeks"!   I was so upset I burst into tears--I have ZERO intention of taking the meds he prescribed or any of the other options.  I just cant bring myself to go back there.  Is there any oversight into DR's that treat patients in this way?  Seriously...what does a TV dr. have to do with me?  He mentioned he sees 5000 patients...do they all get morphine and oxy?  He was disturbed he cant prescribe methadone anymore as a patient with sleep apnea died on him!~   Who do I speak to about his horrible behavior?

This topic certainly gets my goat!!! Doctors take a Hippocratic Oath, when they become doctors.  I know this is a long post, but we all need to be reminded of our providers role to us, the patient. Our doctors need to be reminded everyday of the oath they took!!!!!

The Hippocratic Oath
(Modern Version)

I SWEAR in the presence of the Almighty and before my family, my teachers and my peers that according to my ability and judgment I will keep this Oath and Stipulation.

TO RECKON all who have taught me this art equally dear to me as my parents and in the same spirit and dedication to impart a knowledge of the art of medicine to others. I will continue with diligence to keep abreast of advances in medicine. I will treat without exception all who seek my ministrations, so long as the treatment of others is not compromised thereby, and I will seek the counsel of particularly skilled physicians where indicated for the benefit of my patient.

I WILL FOLLOW that method of treatment which according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patient and abstain from whatever is harmful or mischievous. I will neither prescribe nor administer a lethal dose of medicine to any patient even if asked nor counsel any such thing nor perform the utmost respect for every human life from fertilization to natural death and reject abortion that deliberately takes a unique human life.

WITH PURITY, HOLINESS AND BENEFICENCE I will pass my life and practice my art. Except for the prudent correction of an imminent danger, I will neither treat any patient nor carry out any research on any human being without the valid informed consent of the subject or the appropriate legal protector thereof, understanding that research must have as its purpose the furtherance of the health of that individual. Into whatever patient setting I enter, I will go for the benefit of the sick and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief or corruption and further from the seduction of any patient.

WHATEVER IN CONNECTION with my professional practice or not in connection with it I may see or hear in the lives of my patients which ought not be spoken abroad, I will not divulge, reckoning that all such should be kept secret.

WHILE I CONTINUE to keep this Oath unviolated may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the art and science of medicine with the blessing of the Almighty and respected by my peers and society, but should I trespass and violate this Oath, may the reverse by my lot.

I do have a supportive dr, but only to a certain extent.  There is a very fine line that I have to be careful not to cross with her - or she gets crazy and starts to act like I'm a drug user and only wanted narcotics!

It gets really old - it's almost like I have to guard what I say or she will not prescribe me what I need and know works.  I've also started cutting my pain and anxiety pills in half - even though they don't work as well - but if I let on that they work or that I need more - she goes off half cocked about how I will need rehab! UGH!

I am going through almost the same thing. I have had a change in insurance because my husband is now on unemployment.(I have state insurance now.) my new pain management Doctor treats me as a potential drug abuser even though I have no drug abuse history. He took me off the meds that were working well for me-I was working, exercising, doing yoga, had a social life and went to all my childrens activities. He put me on his set course of medication  for Fybromyalgia and now I am in bed half of the day, I can barely work, I can't take care of my kids and i never leave the house because it is so painful for me to  function. Yet there is nothing I can do except abide by this man's decisions. I really don't know what to do because I know if I go to him and ask for pain medication he will simply think that I am "drug seeking." so I don't and just suffer and my whole family suffers with me.

I would call your state board and report him!
He's a total jerk!

You are right to not take his prescriptions or return to his practice again!

I'm so sorry that happened to you.  Why would such a creep work in a pain management clinic.  The people that go to clinics like that need a sympathetic ear not a jerk that only stresses you out and makes the pain and depression worse. I would definately get another doctor if your insurance will cover it.  I would find out who the administrator is at that clinic and phone them and tell them what happened.  Let them know this may have worsened your condition.  I would also let my primary care doctor know how much this upset you and that it only made your symptoms worse.

Doesnt your insurance change give you another choice of pain doctor??  Is he the only one?? This guy sounds like a real jerk!  Could your primary doctor take over you pain management?  I wish I had a definitive answer for you
