GERD and Hiccups and bending over

I have pretty bad GERD, saw a gastroenterologist for a year, had many tests, including the one with the pH meter in your esophagus. The result of all these is that I'm "normal." Quit going to that guy and haven't done much with the problen since. I've got three things that usually come together, one before the others, but they all seem related. If I'm laughing or coughing, I can get hiccups, sometimes painful ones that are hard to get rid of. Then I feel that familiar GERD problem. And if I bend over, like to load the dishwasher, I get reflux. Any ideas? Is there a positional factor in GERD? Could the irritation from GERD make the hiccups worse? Or does the irritation in my throat from GERD trigger coughs that then make the hiccups come?

Yes, I am overweight.

I have an endoscopic examination since this post. The doctor said there were signs of irritation, but did not mention Hiatal hernia. Since then my GERD has improved greatly. I am taking two medicines for it and they are helping. However, the hiccups continue. I had three episodes today, each lasting about 5 minutes.

There may be some pressure on the phrenic nerve causing the hiccups. Were you tested for hiatal hernia? Are you overweight? THere can be several causes. Did the doctor recommend anything at all?
