I would try Zantac first. If it doesn't work, then you can try something stronger like Prilosec. Keep in mind, Prilosec may come with a lot of side effects that can be just as bothersome as the GERD. I was prescribed Prilosec and took it for six weeks until I couldn't take it any longer. Too many side effects for me. It basically blocks acid from the stomach, and while it is effective at getting rid of heartburn, you may experience a rebound once you stop taking them. You should consult with a doctor to see what they recommend before taking anything.
I forgot to mention if u have post nasal drip it too can cause reflux and a sore throat...so not just reflux alone and y u need to see a Dr to make sure u r treating the source of the problem.
Hi and welcome to the GERD forum.
It depends, and I am sure that is not what u wanted to hear, but the meds work differently for all of us, and u do have to modify ur diet and lifestyle along with taking the meds as RX'd.....
So yes, u should see a Dr and not just try to take OTC meds.....
Look to what u eat and drink...and things like; do u smoke into account as all of that will affect how the meds can help.
