How can I get rid of a granuloma on the larynx?

For 10 years on and off I have had a granuloma on the larynx.  Symptoms include tightness in the voice box, stabbing pain on speaking, and hoarseness.  This had a bad effect socially and at work, when I would keep a low profile and reduce the occasions when I would need to talk.  I had 3 operations in the first 5 years without success (it just came back) but a breakthrough came 4 years ago when my ENT specialist put me on lansoprazole, a PPI, believing that it was probably due to acid reflux (although I had no symptoms).  The granuloma disappeared over the next 6 months.

However, it sometimes comes back, or at least the symptoms do, every few months, but go again after 2 or 3 weeks.  But over the last week or so symptoms have come back with a vengeance.

I remain on lansoprazole (30mg) and am now wondering what my next move should be.  I'm assuming acid reflux is the cause as I don't abuse my voice.  I'm pretty desperate as I lost my job 4 months ago and was planning to train as a teacher in September, where a decent voice is a prerequisite.

Does anyone else have a similar problem?

Hi, and sorry it's taken 14 years to reply!
The operations were to remove the lump (granuloma) on the larynx.  I really don't know why they did this without addressing the cause, which seems to have been acid reflux.  The lansoprazole worked but I have used Gaviscon in recent years.  The problem comes back from time to time, like now, which is why I'm on this site!  I'm hoping a resumption of lansoprazole will sort me out in the next few weeks.  How are you now?

Hi sounds like u have silent reflux...since u do not have the normal symptoms.

But since u r meds u should also be following the diet and lifestyle chanfes to keep it at bay.

The Health Pages here on MedHelp have lists with foods to avoid and tips like to elevate the head of ur bed.

U can access the Health Pages thru the icon above recent activities or a link in the welcome message at the top of the forum.
