LPR Question

I'm fairly certain I have LPR.   Acid taste in my mouth many days and mild sore or scratchy throat.  I have no lump in my throat, no coughing, etc.  Three of my favorite things in life are red wine, coffee and chocolate which I know are all bad for me!

I did go to see an ENT a month or so ago and he performed a larangoscopy.  Said all looked good.....not tumors, etc and I'm not sure he could tell I had LPR had I not mentioned to him.  Prior to the appt I had been taking Nexium 24 (20 mg in the a.m. and 20 mg at night) and my throat was feeling pretty good.  Soon thereafter I stopped taking and the issue resumed so I started taking again.

My question is how long can I safely take Nexium 24 and at what dosage.  I realize this is not going to be medical advice for a Dr but I cant' imagine 2 weeks on the purple pill (Nexium 24 advice to see a Dr post 2 weeks) is going to help many folks with moderate to severe LPR.

Sounds like some folks have been on Nexium for years under a 40 mg prescription.........when/if I start feeling ok again after resuming taking the medication how long should/can I continue on it?

Hi and welcome to the GERD forum.

Everyone is different as to how the meds will help....most of us need to modify diet and lifestyle... AND when on a med like Nexium....which is a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) you need to step off the meds slowly to help prevent rebound effect which can cause your symptoms to increase.

Talk with your Dr again, let him/her know you felt better on the med and now have symptoms returning....the Dr may offer to change the dosage and suggest you modify your diet....

As to how long you can safely take the meds...as long as you are under a Drs care they should be sending you for testing to make sure you do not develop side effects from the meds....some people have safely been on these meds for many years.

Again talk with your Dr.
