Scary nighttime issue

Hello. I am becoming increasingly concerned with an ongoing issue I have. I am on prescription Omeprozole and have been for some time. It does a great job keeping heartburn and acid reflux away. However I have learned that I can't have dairy too close to going to bed. If I have ice cream or milk and lay down within an hour or two I wake up coughing and choking on acidic liquid. So I make sure I don't have dairy. Simple. However, the last couple of nights it's been happening anyways. I made sure I didn't drink any alcohol or eat too much before bed and it still happened. I try to remember to lay on my left side and that helps but I'd love to know what's causing this. I wake up feeling panicked almost like I'm drowning. I cough and cough to clear it out and it's nasty. Is this a sign of something serious?

Have you tried using memory foam acid reflux bed wedges for laying down and sleeping? Just another suggestion in case you hadn't already tried them. http://www.cosyco.co.uk/support-pillows/memory-foam-acid-reflux-wedge-pillow

Hi and welcome to the GERD forum.

The best rule of thumb is not to eat for 3 to 4 hrs b4 laying down....not just going to sleep....since you are having this issue...try elevating the head of your bed...

Milk and dairy can cause more phlegm and cause some of the issues...if you have PND you may want to try a antihistamine.....talk to your Dr.....

For someone on meds for reflux any alcohol should be off limits....you have certain foods you should avoid...meds can not do the work alone....
