can GERD cause this?

I started having trouble swallowing about two years ago, with stomach pains, and chest pains.  I went to the hospital when the chest pains started.  They ran ekg, blood work, chest xray and everything was good.  My doctor ran a ekg and listed to my heart and it was good, as well as, he had me get a echocardio at the cardiologist office and it was good.  He finally sent me to a gastro doctor and they ran a EGD, colonoscopy, and small bowel xray.  They said I had gerd and a hiatus hernia.  I take 40mg of prilosec twice a day.  I still get pain in my epigastrium, sharp chest pains that last only seconds and are not always in the same spot, and sore throat.  the sore throat comes on when i have chest pains and stomach pains.  Does any have this problem to and is it gerd related?

Hi there,

Yip.  Your swallowing issues and ENT symptoms as well as chest pains can all be GERD related.  It is always good to eliminate the heart as the cause for chest pains, so now you can focus on getting your GERD under control.  The chest pains can be spasm from your Oesophagus muscle that gets irritated by the reflux/acid - Chricopharengeal muscle spasms.  Some muscle-relaxants (Endep/Diazapam) helps for this.

40mg Prilosec is almost maximal medication and now you need to concentrate on getting your diet and lifestyle in order.  If you smoke:  stop.  If you have big meals during the day, break it down into 6 small meals and don't eat close to bedtime.  If you have a bit of weight to loose, then loose it as that would also improve GERD.  Some people can manage their GERD by just doing some lifestyle changes.

Hope the info helps and keep talking to us :)

All the best for you GI consult on the 12th.

I am going away for the week but when I return I'd be very interested to know what the GI said.

All the best and talk to you soon.

It is good news for you that the Hiatus Hernia is small and if you follow a healthy-GI friendly diet, then maybe one day soon you can be medication free!

Prilosec, Nexium and other PPI's are normally prescribed for longterm use and it is save enough to do so.  I was on 80mg Nexium before I eventually had my Nissen operation.

For now you should take the Prilosec as prescribed.  Definitely keep a food diary and highlight the acid-triggers and make some lifestyle changes.  It is really important that you don't eat to close to bedtime.  You can even drink a bit of Gaviscon before bedtime.  That would stop the night-time reflux.

If you eat 5-6 small meals during the day and chew your food properly and eat and swallow slowly, then you should also feel an improvement soon.

Keep me updated on your progress :)

Yes, I eat to fast and i sometimes eat close to bedtime.  I also drink pop a lot.  I need to stop that.  My Egd in march showed a small hiatus hernia and acid reflux. This is the only health issue i have.  I have another gastro appointment on sept 12.  The doctor told me to keep up on my prilosec.  I hope nothing bad happens from it. Your thoughts?

Hi there,

Thanks, but I am not a Doctor or Medical professional.  Just a patient, like you, that have been struggling with my health.  I managed to empower myself with knowledge and learned to listen to my body.

A Hiatus Hernia can definitely cause you chest pains!  It depends on how big the Hernia is.

Do you think there is anything that you can still change in your lifestyle and diet?

Are you a doctor? You sound very knowledgeable and intelligent.  Could the hiatus hernia cause chest pains too?
