is there a way to phrase Gerd syptoms to Drs?

I have had bad acid reflux for a couple of years now, assuming that is what it is. Has anyone on here found a way to combat it?  When it acts up I have severe left side chest pain/pressure.  At first it scared the hell out of me, but now that I know what it is it isn't so bad.  It does hurt though...a lot.  I have gone to the Dr several times and I keep getting told to increase the amount of Prilosec I take daily, this is after they hook you up to an EKG machine (not even close to cheap).  Has anyone out here found a way to phrase "I have chest pain" without saying that?   Moreover, is there anyway to get rid of the symptom because I always joke that I'll die of a heart attack, but being I have a family history of them its a possibility.  IF I would have a heart attack at some point it would be good if I got help immediately and not spend the first several minutes thinking it was just an episode of heartburn.

Gastroesophageal reflux can be described as a burning sensation in your chest worse after eating.
