Life after Gallbladder removal

I had my gallbladder removed last year (Aug 2017). Since then my life has become horrible and I feel depressed most of the times. For the 1st 7 to 8 months I suffered with nausea, diarrhea and upper right abdominal pain. I met my surgeon couple of times due to these problems. He ordered ultrasound scanning and it showed everything as normal and fatty liver grade 1( which I had before gallbladder removal). From past one month I am getting severe pain under ribcage, dry and itchy eyes, diarrhea, pale stools, I cant sit for too long because of the pain in upper abdomen. Most of the time I feel depressed. Just last week I myself went to have another ultrasound scanning and blood test. Results were fatty liver grade 1 and LFT results showed sgpt (alt)75, sopt 46.  Please let me know if anybody is having same issue or went through all these after gallbladder removal.

Hi, I have had my gall bladder removed April 2020 due to ascending colon cancer with the tumour adjacent to the liver and suspected invasive (it wasn't).

I am now suffering from fatigue, depression, lack of energy, mood swings, lack of concentration, noticed short term memory loss etc.

During my cancer battle (now in full remission) I was diagnosed Iron deficient and anemic. Those immediate conditions have cleared.

As the symptoms developed I kept in mind the Iron deficiency and as I researched interactions and cancer disease quite extensively I noted during that research that Iron and Copper are very much part of the diagnosis for colon cancer sufferers (and others) and this is very important to understand for anyone who has had their gall bladder removed.

Essentially, Copper is required for the body to work with Iron in the appropriate manner and without that there will be all the symptoms that come with Iron deficiency. Copper deficiency itself causes all the symptoms I enumerated as well as many others including very serious disease.

The Liver is responsible for regulating Copper and bile is the primary storage for Copper in the body. Bile recirculates from the liver to the gall bladder, to the colon when needed and then returns so that it can be reused.

Surgeons have a poor understanding of anything to do with metabolism or how the body works. I was warned during my undergraduate medicine studies by one of the most senior doctors of my country of Surgeons wanting to cut and slice into any organ because typically the body will counteract anything they do eventually. They are just not competent here and post-surgery have no interest because they know they don't have the skills to understand what is going on. This is probably why anyone who have had the gall bladder removed is falling between the chairs. The surgeon won't do anything and anyone else (GPs)  are too pre-occupied with more generally occurring disease.

So, the problem here is that without a gall bladder the chances are very high that you will be Copper deficient and unless that is rectified you cannot live a normal life. Without enough bile salts released at the right time (which the body was capable of with a functioning gall bladder) any fat soluble materials needed will not be picked up as it passes through the digestive system. This is a long list of essential Vitamins and more.

I've started taking Bile salts and I started Copper supplements and have noticed a drastic improvement in my condition since. It is still early days, but as I trawled through these forum posts I couldn't help responding with my current opinion on the matter.

I hope you still see that it is early days but if you suspect the above is what is causing your condition then you should ask for health care provider for a copper serum and Ceruloplasmin blood test. Copper can also be tested through urine and hair samples and by combining all a very detailed understanding of the body's struggle with Copper can be attained and understood.

Happy to help by sharing my experience. I am doing great after starting on copper supplements, with only occasional tiredness but nothing like before.

I am due to check up on my levels ~ now and will post back some data when done. As far as ox bile is concerned I have noticed that it seems to be ok to take these sporadically, or when eating very fatty foods. So it isn't necessary to take them with every meal or even every week. Experimentation is the best way to find out what works with these salts. I recommend checking copper, zinc, iron (and possibly other minerals) every 3 months or so though. They are not to be messed with in case you get too much of any of these.
copper/zinc supplements I should have said...they need to be kept in sync.
