I have had Achalasia for 2 years...and have had severe pain..prior to the balloon dialtation it was muscle spasm...while my esphogus was dying off...but now it is acid from my stomack...feels like a heart attach....the only thing that works is gaviscon..I find the chewable tablets are the best...I go now where without them...they are in my pocket and beside my bed...it cures it in about 30 seconds....they have tried me on many different acid reducers...like pariet, nexium etc...but if the acid is strong enough to digest food it is strong enough to burn my esphogus....so if you have had dialtation done try gaviscon....if not something to stop the muscle spasms in your chest area as the disease progresses...

Hello - I was diagnosed with achalasia when I was 26 (I am now 28) and have had two myotomy's.  Before I was diagnosed I would complain to my husband that I was having "heart attacks"...  I would chug water and it would likely go away.  I am still having the "attacks" and am finding that water doesn't cut it anymore but yogurt usually takes care of it.  Hope that helps!
I just had an appointment with my Thorasic Surgeon yesterday and we are now talking about having gastric bypass due to excessive acid and bile. Apparently the second surgery was so successful I am now battling with ulcers which are causing excruciating pain.    I am also having a very difficult time swallowing and food is getting stuck frequently which leads to me vomitting.  Not sure I want to go that route but I definitely don't think I can live with this pain.  Has anyone had bypass after a myotomy?

Hi I'm a 29 year old woman and was just diagnosed with achalasia. I had botox recently to give me relief until surgery which has worked good, but I have been waking up in the middle of the night with shooting pains in my throat that spread to my chest. I used to get them sometimes but one sip of water would get rid of it, now nothing helps. Is this the kind of pain your having? Also, could you tell me about the surgery? What is the recovery like? Where did you have it done? Was is the laproscopic one? Sorry about all the questions =)

Has your doc given you any suggestions as to what might be causing the discomfort? Is it due to muscle spasms?
