Acid Reflux

What is a good food to eat while suffering with acid reflux?
I appreciate all advice.  I'm taking prevacid at the moment.

For the record, though, if the doctor's pushing fiber, then the problem may not be fiber itself. See, fiber slows down digestion, but only in the stomach. In the intestines it helps whisk food through the system and helps the colon in doing its thing. You may not be having problems with the speed of your digestion, but with the quality of it, in which case I recommend something like probiotics. An easy way to get these is with live-culture yogurts like "Activia". You may also want to consult with a hollistic physician to see whether adding HCL capsules to your diet might be beneficial. (It's important you consult with a physician because in your case it may be more harm than good.)

Good luck.

gnorb,
thank you for your advice. you aren't the first one that has told me that, so probably is something I should do.  The doctor was pushing fiber but I am still having problems, even with the fiber.  Thank you for your help. I will try that!

Glad you found the comment helpful. However, I'd steer clear of shellfish for the time being if I were you. (And yes, I too enjoy (LOVE!) crab legs, which is why it's so hard for me to say what I just did.) They're bottomfeeders and as such will likely contain a fair amount of contaminants, something your body can do without. And as for the fish, try not to have it more than 4 times per week, and make sure you stick to low-mercury varieties (such as Alaskan salmon). The closer you can get to a vegetarian diet, the better. See also about cutting out gluten from your diet to see whether that helps. I find that my heartburn is made worse when I have a lot of grains, particularly gluteny grains like wheat. (I still have some issues with buckwheat, but not as often.)

@lvfrogs: From the sound of it, you may want to go on a low-fiber/low-fat diet for the moment. Fiber and fat both slow digestion, and if you have slowed digestion for some reason they'll just make it worse. Obviously, you should get as much fiber as you can, but try to get it small amounts at a time. (Pureed food will be your friend here, as will chewing REALLY REALLY well. Don't swallow anything you couldn't suck through a straw.)

Thank you so much for your comment.  I will stay away from dairy and meats.  I love fish and seafood, especially crab legs.  Thank you so much for all who have me feedback!!

Take care all!

When do you see your doctor again? You have lots of questions to ask him. Take the suggestions on here and tell him.  The H Pylori test is for an infection that you can have that will cause problems. I have had mine tested through bowel movements, but I have read that there is also a breath test and it is more accurate. I don't know more than that, but you could good it.

The above post was very good. I avoid dairy and since the surgery haven't been able to eat meat - found out that the hard way after eating it, so those are good suggestions. I also avoid salads because when they did the surgery, that is what they found a lot of still in my intestines, not digested at all.

Ask the doctor about going back to the Nexium if you like it better?
Take care!

As a course of treatment, you may want to start eating papaya fruit, if it's available in your area. This is actually first line treatment in many countries. Organic apple juice is also helpful. (I've not had much luck with apple cider vinegar, so for me this remains a folk legend rather than an actual cure.)

For the moment, avoid all dairy. In fact, avoid all meats other than fish for the time being. (If you must eat meat, make sure it's something like skinned chicken breasts. Beef is horrendous for you.)

However, the foods which may be good for you are highly dependent on the particular reason for your acid reflux.

I suggest following a very strict GERD diet for a while, and you've seen here which foods to avoid (you may also want to search the Internet: while there are a lot of diets, most have about 90% in common), though I also highly recommend you avoid cold foods like smoothies, ice cream, etc. (If you can, avoid iced drinks as well, and try to take your beverages to as close to room temperature as possible.)

The reason I say it depends on the reason for your acid reflux is because in other medical systems the relationship between the organs plays an important role in GERD. (If you can find a good acupuncturist and/or holistic physician, do it. It won't cure it, but it helps. A LOT.) You may also want to consider the relationship between your emotions and your heartburn. Taking something called Hyland's Calms has helped a lot with mine, which seems to be heavily related to my anxiety. Exercise also helps with this an immense amount.

If you're a coffee drinker, you may want to check something called "Teeccino" out. It's meant to be a coffee substitute that has no caffeine and is actually alkaline rather than acidic. (Coffee's been shown to weaken the LES, regardless of whether it's regular or decaf.)

Good luck with your reflux!

Thank you lvfrogs for your comment.  Even though I haven't had an endoscopy or a colonoscopy done I have been too afraid to eat.  I still feel the pain in my chest and back. I was taking Nexium for 2 years and then the doctor switch me to prevacid about six months ago.

I seem to like nexium better.  The only food that bother me with nexium was lettuce and juices.  Now it seems like everything.

I don't know whether or not milk products is good for you or should you avoid them?  Also, what is the Hyplon test?

I don't know how severe yours is. I went to the gastro doctor 2 years ago and had an endoscopy/colonoscopy done and the endoscopy showed a small hiatel hernia and that is when they told me not to eat all the things mentioned above.  I also recently underwent surgery for intestine removal, so am not eating much at all right now, but the little bit of meat I have tried to eat, didn't do so well.  I have had the Hpylori test twice and always came back negative, but definitely something you should have done. Does the prevacid work? I take prilosec. Somethimes you have to try different meds.  Good luck!

Thank you so much Boron.  I have an appointment schedule with the gastroenterologist next week and I will mention this test.  I have been so paranoid over this.  I'm thinking it's my heart when the doctor tellinig me it's not.  I had a stress test and an EKG done.

I have become to afraid to eat anything.  This is my first time participating in a forum and I want to thank all for your comments: you, lvfrogs, and redheart.

H. pylori is the most often cause of gastric ulcer and GERD.

Breath test is done by gastroenterologist. You drink a suspension with urea, which H. pylori breaks down and release gas, which is then measured in expired air. More simple blood test also exists, but this one shows also previous iunfections with H. pylori, so breath test is more reliable.

I don't know about good foods, but my experience with it might help.  I always thought it was caused by spicy foods, coffee, chili, etc.
Several times I have gone on the Atkins diet.  When I cut out carbohydrates I never experienced acid reflux.  Have done that for three or four periods over the past seveal years, and always had the same experience. Hope this helps.

Hi,
It is very difficult to tell as each person has his own negative reaction with these foods with acid refelx. For say, citrus fruits, onion, tomato, soda, caffine of any form , beverages, chocolet etc.

But make sure to control emotions , do yoga or meditation. Eat small meals more times, drink lots of plain water. Excercise regularly. Keep positive.

Reflex is not a diesease and once you have, you have it for life. It is way of life. say 50 percent of us have.

First, be sure to have a breath test for H. pylori.

Avoid acidic foods: vinegar, fruits, soda, alcohol, spices (paprica...). Also aspirins, ibuprofen, vitamin C.
Avoid protein-rich foods: meat, eggs; and heavy fatty foods: oil, cream, nuts.

I wish I could tell you what is good to eat, I only know the ones that aren't but in case you don't know what you should avoid, here they are: tomatoes, caffeine, chococlate, alcohol, spicy foods.  I do know that since I have stopped drinking coffee and avoiding the other foods, I have way less acid reflux. Hope this helps or someone else will come along and give you a good answer
