Stomach Burning

For about the last week I've been experiencing stomach burning.  The first day it came on I actually vomitted as it felt like there was so much acid in my stomach - or I assume it's acid.   The burning is quite consistent, and I also have a bit of bloating and slight gas feel in it too as I will get subtle type of gas pains.  I went to my regular Dr. a few days ago and he put me on Aciphex.  I've been on it for abou 4 days and so far I'm getting nothing from it, although he did say to give it a week.  The only thing that does give me relief for 10-12 hours is Zantac (although it takes about 2 hours to kick in it seems).  I am getting no other pains although tonight for the first time I experience a subtle pain on my left side.

I'll be 37 next month and have no history of any serious health problems (I'm 6'2", 185).  I do resistance/weight training (though haven't lately), I don't smoke, don't drink, and eat a pretty well balanced diet.  I've always had somewhat of a sensitive stomach (father's side of family does too), but this is the first time I've experienced this issue.  I'm trying to keep an eye on my acid intake too, of course.  I have been under a little more stress the last couple of months as I was laid off and am having a very difficult time finding a job.  I'm also not sleeping real well.  However, with all of that said, I don't feel overly stressed if you know what I mean.

Any suggestions?

You are welcome.

I had an endoscopy and a gastric emptying study that includes the nuclear-egg I mentioned. Both are painless. I am doing better because I really monitor my meals and I do not eat as much at one sitting. I am having other issues that are not related.

I wish you luck and hope you find out what's going on.

Thanks, Starbuck82.

What sort of tests or procedures did the gastroenterologist run on you?  How are you doing now?

I do feel a little full quickly....but not terribly so.

Perhaps you should be seen by a gastroenterologist. Your pain and nausea sound familiar as I experienced something similar back in October. I was diagnosed with gastroparesis. Are you having a difficult time eating? Do you feel full quickly? Gastroparesis is delayed stomach emptying and can be diagnosed after a 2-hour test in which you eat an egg with a nuclear tracer in it. I found out that my food stays in my stomach twice as long as it should and that was the reason for my symptoms. I had severe stomach burning as well.

I would ask your doctor to refer you to a gastro doc if it doesn't get better in a few days. Zantac tends to help me as well, but my bout with the stomach burning was far worse than typical acid reflux and it sounds like yours is as well. Gastroparesis would be my first thought, but you should be seen by a gastroenterologist, as I already mentioned.

Hope this helps!
