Large hiatal hernia on CT

I received my report back from a recent Abd/Pelvic CT scan.  I was diagnosed with anemia about one month ago and they are trying to find the cause.  One possible cause is Celiac's disease.  The other is hiatal hernia.  My report findings are:  A large retrocardiac hiatal hernia is seen with the gastric fundus and at least half of the gastric body projecting above the diaphragm, protruding through the esophageal hiatus.
I am scheduled for a capsule endoscopy in about 3 weeks.  I suffer occassional heartburn but Dr has put we on Prilocsec which I have had no problems with since.
My question is... with a hiatal hernia this large, are they going to end up doing surgery???  I am a 48 year old female, 168 pounds and 5'3"....

Hey,  I just joined this forum, and I see your post is a year old.  But- did you get the hernia fixed and did the anemia go away WITHOUT the help of iron pills?   If not, I'd suggest a colonoscopy because that's where they found a bleeding polyp that was the source of my anemia.  My gastro Doc said a hietal hernia wouldn't cause anemia unless it was bleeding, and the only common cause of bleeding/anemia an endoscopy looks for is an ulcer.  But the colonoscopy literally saved my life in the long run, and the anemia was a sign.

hi, sometimes with pure medication the hernia goes back in place, even by itself sometimes, if in time it does not then the only alternative is surgery, but not surgery in the classic sense, these days its less intrusive and without side-effects, pinhole surgery is the usual tool thats favoured by gps these days, cheers.
