Pain after Gallbladder removal

Hello:

I am 22 and this past summer I had to have my gallbladder removed because it was no longer functioning. My doctor did a poor job of explaining why or how this could happen to a 22 year old female who's not over weight or ever been pregnant. So I am wondering what risk factors would have caused this to happen to a healthy person my age?

Also ever since the surgery I have been experiencing pain off and on on the sides of my body right around where my rib cage ends. Most of the time these sharp shooting pains last only a few seconds but the past two days I have been in a lot of pain. It has been 8 months since my surgery and this recent episode has been almost as painful as before I had my gallbladder removed. I was wondering what causes these types of attacks? Is it normal? And what can I do to prevent/stop them?

welcome,,,and sorry to hear about your pain
what you are having is 1 or either 2 things i can think of.
1...phantom pain that almost 80% of all gullbladder removed patients still get!!
they still get the same pains even though there gullbladder was removed.
2...a stone could be cought up in the duct leading to the pancreas, and your experiencing pain because they didnt clean your duct work fully, exct.

personaly i dont see why they would take a gullbladder from a 22 year old for any reason.
it does not kae much since to me,,,even if your function was very low,,,your awefully young for that to be done,,,now if it did quit working, witch doesnt usualy just happen after working fine for 22 years,,i guess so,but man,you should have gotten a few openions i hate to tell you!!!
either way,i also hate to tell you if they are actualy "phantom" pains, you best prepair for that same pain for a long time,,,it usualy doesnt just go away,,people tend to have to live with it.
