Pain from diverticular disease

I have been having severe pain in my lower left quadrant.  I have had diverticulosis for at least 10 years, and have had approx 2 attacks of diverticulitis each of those 10 years.  About 6 or 7 months ago, I started having the lower left quadrant pain.  It has gotten worse over these months, to the point where it's there all the time.  I get a little relief when lay. down.   I have had two abdominal/pelvic cat scans, an abdominal and pelvic ultrasound, an upper GI with small bowel through.  Basically the only thing that showed was "significant diverticular in the sigmoid colon."  I truly believe it is the diverticular causing the pain, but the doctors tell me diverticulosis usually does not cause pain, and only when the diverticular become infected and diverticulitis is present is pain experienced.  The doctor sent me home with Levsin, which does nothing to touch the pain I'm having.  Isn't it possible that 10 years of diverticulitis attacks could have caused damage or narrowing of the sigmoid which would account for the pain I'm having. None of the doctors ordered a barium enema, which to my belief should be done to check the sigmoid colon.  Does anybody have any thoughts or experience with this.  I do move my bowels with the help of fiber and senna, but the stool that comes out is loose.  I never feel empty.  I feel like there is hardened stool in my sigmoid that won't move, which causes this pain. I need help.  I am in pain everyday and have no life due to the pain.

Thank you for your comment. Would either of the infections you speak of cause an elevated white blood count? The reason I ask, because when I went to ER in Sept. I was told my white blood count was normal. Trace blood was found in my urine, so the ER doctor thought I might have a kidney stone, but CT scan showed no sign of a stone. I forgot to mention that I also have SIBO.  I was put on a round of Rifaximin, but that was two years ago. I take probiotics daily but have not had another round of Rifaximin sine the initial dose two years ago. If I do have either of the infections you mentioned, what is the treatment?  Antibiotics? Any input you can give, would be appreciated.
This pain has been going on for months, and I can't take much more.

Hi, what your doctor said is true. Only when the diverticula are inflamed they cause pain. The pain described by you could be due to gastroenteritis, which is infection of the intestines. Amoebiasis is another infection, which can cause similar symptoms. Other common causes are constipation and indigestion. So, don't worry and discuss these options with your doctor when you happen to meet him next time. Regards.
