Pancretitis

Thursday, April 23, 2009

Hi Forum,

I am 37 year old male and an example for the worst case of Pancreatis. I had acute necrotising pancreatitis on 5th June 2007. It all happened just out of blue. On the previous day I had gastric pain and the local physician (MBBS) gave me tablets to reduce gastric effect & pains. The following day I had this abdominal pain growing by hour. I again visited the same physician with same symptoms. He administered me an Injection to reduce the gastric pain but the effects were opposite. He wisely suspected a serious problem to come and adviced / referred to to a MD who is gastroenterologist and I reached him in 5 minutes. But before I could explain him my situation I collasped on his sofa rolling with severe pain. I suspect that my physicain had informed him about my situation before I could reach there. He immediately got me admitted with the treatement relating to pancreatitis. My intake from mouth was immediately stopped and My CT scan was done with urgent reporting instructions. As he suspected my pancreas was getting bad to worse as minutes passed by.

In about 40 minutes of getting admitted I fell unconsious with the unbearable pain and even in un consious state I was voilently restless and myboth the hands & legs tied to the bed as they could not put the IV to give antibiotics. I had to be given morfine to get stable. I was unconsious for 2 continious days. I was Nill By Mouth for 20 days. On the 21st day I was wished Happy birth day by the attending doctors on the 21st day and told me that on the first day itself my family was already informed I may not survive even the next 4 days.

I had my first drink on the 21st day that too 1 sip of water and beleive me even that was so filling that I vomited even that. But my doctor told me that its nothing to get worried and I am out of danger now. I had already reduced from 64 Kgs. to 51 Kgs.

I was discharged on 10th July 2007 on request for temporary period, but the pain was on and off on discharge. The doctor had advised me for a surgery to remove the discharge from the damged part of Pancreas. But I had to change the hospital cos the treatement was costing me heavily. The doctors had already informed that the medicines for this diesease were costly then normal diesease. So I got admitted to Government run KEM hospital under Dr. Abhay Dalvi on 17th July 2007. There I was told that I shall have to pay only for the medicines which are not available under the Government scheme. But the medicines at the hospital chemist were available at discounted rates.

I was again Nill By Mouth for next 15 days with the same treatement of IV injections of antibiotec medicines. N J tube was inserted during the previous hospitalisation and the current one also. There was continious discharge coming out of the NJ tube which was measured throughout the period of IV feeds. Here again I lost around 6 Kgs and was 45 Kgs on discharge on 8th August 2007. My food intake was limited only upto 2 or 3 morsel of rice which would make me feel filled and could not even have a drop of water over that. But on discharge I was getting this abdominal pains frequently (infact continously) from the very next day of discharge. When the pains started getting unbearable I contacted the Dr who asked me to visit him ASAP and after checking my status asked me to get admitted immediately. Throught this period I was treated with the IV antibiotic conservatively. But had to have asmany as 18   C T Scans and 2 MRI's. The doctors were unable to detect the cause of me getting this diesease.

The most probable cause was told to be Alcohol which I had quit 5 years completely and not even a drop after that. So alcohol was ticked out of list as one of the cause. I was asked about any trauma in the abdominal area even as early as in child hood, but I never had any impact in my stomach region in my life. Even my gall blader was fine and no gall stones detected. After checking all the probable causes and finding none to get me this dieses it was declared as PURE BAD LUCK for me getting this diesease.

Finally on 23rd September 2007 a stent was inserted in my pancreatic duct for a period of 100 days which relived me of this horrible pain. I was discharged for the last time on 27th September 2007. I was adviced CREON 25000 twice a day with the meals and PANTOP 40 to be taken 30 mins before meals. Also Capsule Tramadol SOS incase of pain. for 2 weeks. After that no medication.

I was fine for 8 months down the line. Again after that I started getting abdominal pains and acidity attacks. the pains were severe as before but my doctors told me that its due to indigestion and not directly due to pancretitis. But from there on I am getting such pains once every month and it stays for 3-4 days. Every time I get such pains I am advised to take CREON 25000 2 daily with meals.

Pls somebody advise me any permanent cure for this deadly diesease. This pains just makes me mentally week as the datys goes by. My will power has kept me going till date and I wish to leave for atleast 50 years down the line.

Regards

Hi Nagesh:

I am so sorry you are suffering.  You have been through so much, it's truly a testament to your will to live that you have survived and continue to cope.

Please consider joining a web group.  They are absolutely free.  It is similar to MedHelp except everyone in the webgroup has some familiarity with Acute Pancreatitis, Chronic Pancreatitis, Autoimmune Pancreatitis, Minimal Change Chronic Pancreatitis, Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction and/or other Undiagnosed Digestive Illnesses.  I belong to two groups, Michele's (Sphincterofoddi_pancreatitis) and Maddi's (Pancreatitis_sphincterofoddi) but there are others.

To find them, go to Yahoo!  On the left-hand-side of the page, click the link for Groups.  Search Yahoo! Groups for the keyword "Pancreatitis".   When you find groups that suit you, click on "Join this Group".  You then fill out a request to join and the group Moderator will review it and let you know you have been accepted within a day or two.  If you don't hear back from them within two days, the group may be gone.

These groups offer information, references, databases and links.  More than that, they provide the opportunity to interact with others who have been through exactly what you are going through.  The only people who can truly relate to your experience are people who have had the same or similar experiences.  Pancreatitis, especially, affects every aspect of your life; physically, socially, financially and emotionally.  It affects your relationships.  It changes your lifestyle and yourj quality of life.

I can only imagine what you have been going through.  Please don't suffer through this alone anymore!

All the best,

Sam
