Stomach Pins

I have been diagnosed with hiatus hernia a few years back and has undergone gastroscopy (3 years ago).  Due to some findings in my stool, I also undergone colonoscopy - 7 months ago. I have been taking nexium - 40mg

Last month, while overseas i suffered abdominal pian and chest pain and had nausea and vomitting. I was taken to the hospital and the diagnoses as acute onset of enteritis.

Lately, I have been having stomach pains and at the same time lower back pains. The stomach pain comes right after eating and sometimes it goes away but sometimes it stays for the whole day and beyond. There are also times when I feel like the food I have eaten is till somewhere in my throat.  It is a pain,  though,  which does not render me unable to move or do anything, but is making me wake up in the middle of the night, either of the pain or worry. I am due to have a gastroscopy in a couple of weeks time.  S

Is this a syptom of something really serious?  Should I insist that the gastroscopy be done asap?

Hello and Welcome to the Pain Management Forum. I am sorry to hear about your gastric symptoms.

I encourage you to see as gastroenterologist and not ignore your symptoms. There are multiple conditions that present with your symptoms. However if you are scheduled for a scope I would assume that you have consulted a specialist and are on the right track to solve these questions. A scope should provide you with an accurate diagnosis.

I have a hiatal hernia (15 years since DX) and severe GERD. Some of your symptoms are very similar to mine but a few are not. One of the concerns would certainly be that the gastroenteritis has completely cleared. Obviously you would also want to be certain that is was an accurate diagnosis.

Another might be that you do not have Barrett's Disease if you have had GERD in the past that was not well controlled for any length of time.

I regret that I cannot tell you if your symptoms are serious or not. Pain is experienced differently by all of us. In addition t that fact were symptoms could be indicative of fairly common conditions. However if you have extreme double over pain, notice bloody or coffee ground emesis or dark colored stools that it changes the urgency of the diagnostic tests. Certainly than a scope should be done immediately. If you are concerned about the waiting period that as Sherry suggested consult your physician.

I suggest that, while you are always welcome here that you also post this in the Gastroenterology Forum. Their members may have more suggestions than our Pain Mangement members.

I think it is important that you watch your symptoms. If they change abruptly don't hesitate to seek medical attention. Please let us know how you are doing. We will look forward to your updates with interest.

Take Care,
~Tuck

Hi Concerned,

I'm so sorry that  you are having to endure the discomfort and pain form the Hiatal Hernia. My Dad had a Hiatal Hernia and suffered during and after most meals.

I'm very sorry to hear of the additional problems that occurred while you were overseas. That makes it DOUBLY frightening when it happens out of the Country.

I'm glad that you are getting ready to undergo another Gastroscopy. It wouldn't hurt for you to call your Dr. and see what he thinks about scheduling your Gastroscopy earlier if possible. If nothing else it will relieve you from a lot of stress and worry!!

Please let us know what happens and keep us updated as to the results of the Gastroscopy.

I wish you the VERY best........Sherry
