Stomach discomfort and recent rectal bleeding

I sometimes feel tangling in my stomach and feel as if there's something poking or pulling my stomach from the inside. This sensation is very brief and only occurs once every 30-60 minutes or so. I also sometimes feel very brief and mild sharp and dull pains around my abdomen.

About a month ago I had rectal bleeding during bowl movement 3 times, occurring once every other day. The blood is red and doesn't seem to be much so I've heard it may just be hemorrhoids. My symptoms above occurs after the first bleeding, leading me to think that maybe they may psychological.

My doctor asked me if I had constipation; at the time, I misunderstood what constipation meant. I thought it meant sudden stomach discomfort that leads to the need to have a bowl movement. I did have constipation about 2-3 months ago (hard stool, the sensation of incomplete bowel evacuation) but don't think it has occurred recently. I have never been one to have bowl movements a lot, maybe once every other day or more. He prescribe Colace to me, a stool softener. My question is: Should I continue to use this medication? I don't want to use medication if I don't have to and I don't want to develop a dependence on it.

Thanks for the reply. I talked to my physician about the bleeding but I didn't mention that it happened 3 times in 6 or so days, if that is of any importance. He said to talk to him again if the bleeding reoccurs, without doing any kind of test. My question is: Should I wait until it happens again or should I go get it checked out asap? I know you can't put a price on health but checkups are quite expensive.

Colace is merely a stool softener, but if you don't need, I wouldn't take it.  Your bleeding needs to be investigated especially since you are having stomach discomfort also.  See a gastroenterologist for proper testing and diagnosis.  It may just be hemorrhoids, but "may" isn't good enough, find out for sure by seeing a GI.  Take care...
