Upper GI Endoscopy

Im due to go for an upper GI endoscopy in a few weeks time.  I had one done over 20 years ago and it was even worse than I imagined and now Im terrified of going through it again.  Ive been told I can ask for mild sedation but I had this first time around and it didnt help at all.  I just hate the gagging response when the tube is inserted and then trying to pretend its ok during the whole procedure was a nightmare.  Is there anyway I can ask for a stronger sedative without being treated like an immature fool?  By the way Im in my early forties and normally quite level headed!

This procedure and sedation has improved a lot in 20 years.  My son has to have yearly endoscopies and he is put totally asleep each time. He is 38.
