Upper Right Abdomen Pain

A few months ago, I began getting stabbing pains in my upper right abdomen (right under the ribs).  The pain has now multiplied to the feeling that something is expanding in that area and pushing up under my rib cage.  At times, I feel as if my bottom rib is about to snap.  If I'm already in pain, then sitting, walking and moving usually make the pain worse.  When it gets really bad, I cannot move and can only take shallow breaths.  The pain usually lasts for a few minutes to half an hour, but is a constant part of my life for a few weeks at a time.

2 US and a CT scan show no gallstones.  Blood work is pretty normal, with white counts a bit off.   I tend to get nauseous and slight fevers.  I think it may be my gallbladder, but what other tests can I ask my GI to do?  I don't want to seem like a hypochondriac.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Certainly worth looking more into the gallbladder inflamation possibility however it also sounds a bit like pleuritic pain.

Have you had any chest infections or pneumonia in the past year or so which could have caused any scarring around the lungs?

It sounds like you could have chronic gallbladder inflammation, which is what I had. While I had no gall stones, it was found that my gallbladder was so inflamed that it was only functioning at 3%. You might want to talk to your doctor about doing what is called a HIDA scan. In this scan they inject you with radioactive dye to test how your gallbladder is functioning. That is how they figured out that I had an inflamed gallbladder. Good luck!

Sounds like you have some sort of infection going on. You could still have an infected gallbladder (cholesystitis, sp?) without having problems with gallstones. It happened to me one time. You should go back to see your doctor.
