What does this mean?

Hello, I am an 18 year old male. I was diagnosed with "functional dyspepsia" in October after an upper GI fluoroscopy in September. My general physician told me that there was nothing on the x-rays. Well, recently I accessed my medical records online. I found out that the doctor (a gastroenterologist) who looked at the x-ray results said that I have esophagitis and a "gullet infection." The next day I called up and canceled my next appointment with my general physician. The only medicine I have been taking since then is Omeprazole 20 mg. I have been suffering needlessly.

My question is this: What is a "gullet infection" and what causes esophagitis?

Thank you for the comment. I quit going to my old GP and I will start looking around soon. The only reason I go to a GP is a because my insurance requires me to a get a referral to a specialist.

The weird thing was that at the time I did not feel any pain up in my throat, all of my discomfort was and is in my stomach. I was even taking 40 mg of Protonix a day back then, so I definitely have something wrong like h. pylori. I could never get the doctor to order so much as a simple breath test for it though.

Oh, boy............this is one of the reasons I harp on 'get the results of all of your medical tests and read them. Don't just sit and listen to a doc say that there's nothing wrong.'

I'm sorry to hear what happened. But now you need to take those records to another - decent - doc and find out how to proceed. Esophagitis is generally caused by acid reflux problems. So I'm wondering if the 'gullet infection' could mean that you have H. pylori. If you do, you need to be treated for it.

But the actual term 'gullet infection' doesn't really mean too much - it's definitly NOT medical terminology and it would be hard to even begin to figure out what the heck is going on without looking at all of your records.

Don't put it off - ask around and get the name of a regular or GI doc that others have used and like.
