When should I worry?

My boyfriend has diverticulosis. He has had for about a year now. He is only 25 years old. The doctor couldn't believe that he had this disease at such a young age. He currently is in almost constant pain and doesn't like his left side touched or stretched at this point. Recently he started getting really hot after eating. I know sometime we can get hot after eating a hot meal but it isnt hot meals or anything. I'm curious if we should be concerned? how do you really know when it's turned into diverticulitis?

No he hasnt gotten any rashes. Just horrible pain. He had Kaiser and they were just horrible and didnt even want to do test because he is so young they are kind of dismissing it. So we are looking into other healthcare. :/

Awena,

My doctor thinks that I may have diverticulosis as well. Back in June I got really sick, coughing wheezing  and a rash on my stomach and pale skin areas of my arms and legs and back at first and than the following day I was vomiting and had diareaha, fever, sweating and serious abdominal pain. I went to the ER and they thought I had the stomach flu or something similar. My symptoms went away after about 2 days and than started coming back every 5-6 days for a few hours a day for usually 2 days. This went on for about 6-8 weeks until I finnaly got in to see my family doctor, who wants me to get a CT with contrast shot into my butt. It sounds like your boyfriend has a pretty bad case and I would start consulting with a GI specialist ASAP. As far as if it is cancer or not I'm sure you won't have a positive answer until he gets a more through work-up and tests. I will try to report back as to what my doctor tells me but I suppose I wont really know exactly what's wrong until I get more tests as well. Good luck, get him to that doctor and find out whats going wrong because if his symptoms persist day after day his condition may be serious. In my case the symptoms come and go and have gotten less severe over the last 3 months but again, I'm not 100% sure yet if what I have is actually diverticulosis. Does your boyfriend get a rash at all? My rash is like small ball point pen sized red dots in the pale skin of the insides of my arms, and my stomach and chest.

Thanks for the info. Like I said, when they sent me for a ct scan I had no idea diverticulitis would show up. I've had no symptoms of it until lately. I just hope it is diverticulitis and not cancer. I did read that the infection of diverticulitis can turn into cancer if you have the infection long enough. My doc must be sending me to the GI because he is not really sure which one it is. I hear it is hard to tell the difference on a ct scan. If it is bothering him to much he might have an infection. He is really young for this. I am 46, and from what I have read I am really to young for this. I would get it checked out just in case he has an infection. My gyn perscribed me two antibiotics; and is sending me to a GI. Before I got the call from my doc I  had never heard of it before. What is the difference between diverticulitis and diverticulosis? Good luck, he's lucky he has you looking out for him. Oh yea, before my antibiotics I would have sweat and chills all the time before I found out it was diverticulitis, and just a feeling of a very uncomfortable stomach.

It it goes to the 'itis' stage, he'll experience fever, changes in bowel habits, and intense discomfort on the left side. If he feels that the diverticulosis could be changing he needs to contact his doc and be checked.

He should also normally be following a high fiber diet. But if he's 'moved' into an inflammatory state, then high fiber is contra-indicated.

Call the doc and speak with him.

More and more people in their late 20's and early 30's are unfortunately finding out that they have diverticulosis. So although I know it's of little comfort, he's not alone in what he's going through.
