black stool

I went to the bathroom today and when I went to wipe myself, I noticed the tissue was covered in what looked like black stool.  I looked in the toilet and noticed that there were several stools all dark brown in color.  Only when I wiped myself was it black in color and sticky looking itself.  The other stools in the toilet were definitely more dark brown than black.  Could I have an upper GI bleed?  I have been taking Pepto on and off for acid reflux.

If indeed you are suffering from an upper G I bleed, then the medical name for tarry blackish motions is "melena" and this description may help you to reserach further etc.

The pepto could be the cause of the change in coloration. For now, if you're not having more overt symptoms, keep an eye on the situation.
