Angioman, the latest recommendations that are now starting to be implemented are that anyone with polyps in the gallbladder consider having the GB removed. Polyps are now starting to be looked at as polyps are elsewhere in the body - as precursors to a possible cancerous state. I'd suggest you have a long talk with your doc about the latest recommendations.
Would you reccommend yearly follow-up for a 45 year old who incidentally discovered gall bladder polyps that are completely asymptomatic, less than 1.0 cm, with no stones but a strong family history? Paternal Grandfather died from Gallbladder carcinoma.
If the polyps are not blocking the outlet of the gallbladder and are causing you no problems, most docs usually suggest just monitoring them over time to make sure they do not grow. Small polyps are usually benign - it's when they start to grow that you should become suspicious that something is going on.
However, if the placement of the polyps is causing bile obstruction, then you may have to have surgery.
There is no treatment for gallbladder polyps at the current time.
