Anxiety due to lack of communication

My orthopedic doctor recently performed exploratory surgery on my left foot due to years of pain. They were surprised to find a small bone tumor which is very rare and certainly not their specialty. Their in house pathology lab classified it as benign but sent it to Mayo Clinic for a second opinion. My doctor has been horrible with communication. It’s been two weeks and I’ve heard nothing. Now I’ve just learned my doctor is on vacation so the soonest I would hear anything is the end of next week. I asked to get a copy of the in house pathology report to see why they at least think it was benign. I was told she couldn’t do that, because the report is “pending” the Mayo results. Is this true? Can they with withhold the original pathology results?

Hello~I am so sorry that you are going thru this stress, I would be concerned as well.

Probably, more than likely, it really is benign however, but hearing it from the professional is always more reassuring. I would call the Mayo clinic and see if  they can help.

Oh, I can certainly understand being annoyed and anxious waiting.  Yeesh.  That's a bit unprofessional.  On the plus side to keep in mind is that their pathologist (who went to med school like the Mayo Clinic docs) felt it was benign and this is a confirmation.  I would guess that that opinion will not change.  Of course, you want that to be official.  I wonder if you could call Mayo directly yourself?  Talk to pathology there?  And your doctor being on vacation, he 'should' have a doctor covering for him while unavailable.  I'd ask to speak to that doctor directly. Be a pain in the butt . . . someone should try to help you if you are.  :>)
