Do I have a post viral syndrome?

My symptoms  - I had a sore throat, coughing up mucus, mild temp, sneezing etc, about 4 months ago, ever since, the symptoms keep recurring, mainly coughing. mild crackles in my airways upon waking, which is cleared by coughing up mucus. I have been to my GP quite a few times, have had three different types of anitbiotics, a chest Xray and lung funciton test. Have also been tested for whooping cough and other types of viruses, which are all negative. I feel unwell a lot, and am really sick of coughing, which makes me tired and irritable. I have been taking Womens' multivitamins and Vitamin D3, calcuim and magnesium. I eat a balanced diet and sleep okay. I don't cough at night. I am 62. Can anyone help?

Could be allergies. after a bout of glandular fever followed by the ME I became allergic to alot of foods and now I only eat according to my blood group. get a book about it, it can recommend what vitamins are suitable for your blood type as well as foods. I haven't looked back since I started this diet.

Doh - I completely empathize, I'm having a similar issue.... mine (as it turns out) is entirely related to allergies. But I'm not willing to pay for allergy testing to figure out which item in particular is giving me these symptoms.

What's funny is I'm ALSO taking a multivitamin and (wait for it) magnesium.  I wonder if there is a correlation there?

Regardless, you can try taking a decongestant daily for a while to dry out your membranes. The problem with having excessive mucus is that it can trap bacteria and form a breeding ground.  Make sure you're getting plenty of water to thin the sputum.

Your doctor tested for Reactivated Epstein Barr?  If you DID have that in the (relatively) recent past, it can take weeks to MONTHS to recover fully. It *****. Most people don't have symptoms, but when they do, they're remarkably similar to what you are describing.  EBV excluded, it could be Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.  Perhaps the causation is reversed? The cough and cold symptoms are being caused by the unsatisfied fatigue?  Perhaps depressed thyroid function?

Please keep working with your doctor.  A course of prednisone might help if the fatigue is unrelenting.

Good luck and keep us posted!
