Hole in toenail. should i be concerned with this?

So i noticed just yesterday a hole in my toenail. no idea how it was caused at all.. the remnants of the nail that was "surfaced" fell in the hole. and i cant seem to get it out. rather I havent tried as I'm sure i'd mess up.. https://imgur.com/KC1JX2g is the big toe in question. i provided a photo of the toenail with the hole.   So I was told by my mother and another individual that I should leave it be and the nail will heal itself over time as it grows.  but what will happen to the nail under the fresh grown? will my body eat it like a wood splinter? how will the hole close up? i did sanitize my foot in anti bacterial solution.. incase.

Hello~It might be a good idea to see either your physician or a podiatrist. They may have a type of "shield" to put over the hole or an antibiotic cream to prevent any infection. Since a person feet are on the ground and near bacteria, etc, it is always best to take care of any type of opening or cut.
