Lymph glands

Is it common to feel hard non tender movable lymph glades in the submandibular gland area? They are roughly size of a pea maybe little bigger. I can't feel like unless I look for them. Is this common I'm freaking out that there swollen?
It's just under my jawline above my Adam's apple.

p.s. swollen lymph nodes can be caused by a lot of things. Have you had any tests done such a complete blood count? Immune studies?

P.s. I meant in adults to say swollen lymph nodes in the submandibular area (not retropharngeal, which are in children). It is just an example anyway. My second CT was normal BTW and that was a long time ago.

I found this site particularly helpful. It said in the cervical area at the submandibular area the nodes are normally 15mm or less. So yours are normal. It is a good site to keep. Also, it says that there is a10-20% error if using size criteria alone. I think this is right since you should have some symptoms if you had swollen lymph nodes. For example if you had retropharngeal swollen nodes then you may have a sore throat from an infection.  I guess I do recall that they did measure my lymph nodes on a CT scan once and they thought I had lymphoma based solely on the lymph node near the hilar area. I had no symptoms and nothing wrong with my blood work. The hematologist looked at the Xray and said the node wasn't that big and come back in 6 months don't worry about it. The dumb internal med doctor tried to freak me out, which he did. Always something to worry about eh? See link below if you like.

That is good news, regarding the HIV status. I'll try to google the lymph node size. I usually go by clinical picture along with palpabe lymph nodes. I haven't heard of actually measuring them. Interesting to know.
thanks,

If you look up Google everywhere says 1cm is roughly the normal size and I was worried about HIV but I got a 6 month conclusive negative

I didn't know there was a particular cutoff. LOL.  To me either they are palpable (feel able) or not. I would like to know where they found that info. I'll look it up. But are you worried about HIV?

What's funny. Various websites and Teak from HIV section told me 1cm is normal.

1 cm is swollen. I think since they have been swollen so long you should have them checked just to see if anything is going on.

Have you had any infections in the last month or so? You could also have them due to fighting something off and not having had the virus or what ever caused them to swell. The lymph nodes in the neck can swell when you are fighting infections. That is their general purpose. They should return to normal within a month or two.
