Orange/Brown Discoloration on hands?

I will go to bed with clean hands and wake up in the morning to find my hand (usually left) will have orange/brown stuff on it. Inspecting bedding, nothing. Usually it is my left hand. This happened once every few months for about a year. Recently it has happened multiple times in the past 2 months. The coloring went from and orange to now a brown. It smells like iron (or coins??) and WILL wash off with water and soap. It is really starting to freak me out. I cant find a connection to what would be causing this. I havent handled/touched anything strange or different and the discoloration happens over night seemingly at random. No other part of my body is affected.  What could possibly be causing this?

I dont use tanners or lotion. My bedding is clean. I have found similar posts to this the only difference is that my stains will wash off with water while other posters say theirs doesnt come off.

On an unrelated (or possibly related note) I have been having a lot of gastrointestinal issues lately.

Thoughts?

I think that you are right and it is quite possible that you have too much iron in your system.  My cousin had this problem and the best time for hers to subside a bit was during her monthly cycle to get her iron down.  You may have some blood work to see if this is in fact too much iron in your system.  Best of luck.

I have never heard of anything like this! When you wash this stain off, is your skin red or irritated in any way? Itchy? This has me stumped but I would definitely discuss it with your doctor who may refer you to a specialist such as a dermatologist. I hope you let us know what they diagnose this as. A real mystery!
I wish you the best
