Does fecal matter really get on your hands?

I've always wondered about washing your hands after going to the bathroom. I know it's the right thing to do, but why? If you're using toilet paper and that is between your hand and the fecal matter, how is it possible to get any on your hands if you have not directly touched your fecal matter?

Or do we just wash our hands in case we might have somehow gotten some on our hands? It raises more potential questions, like how sanitary would it then be to pull up your pants before you've washed your hands..

I'm not saying not to wash your hands. I just find it highly unlikely for fecal matter to be able to pass through toilet paper.

I get the feeling you know the answer…..keep those hands washed no matter what….Germs are on your hands more than you think. They carry germs from one person to another. So even if you use the bathroom and assume nothing is getting on your hands, or in contact with them, look at it this way…Every single time you use the bathroom you open and close the door and  the germs from the person before are now on your hands…Then you use the bathroom, flush a toilet that hundreds of people have flushed with their dirty hands and this is before they wash theirs..so now, do you still feel your hands are clean??

Probably because many toilet paper brands suck and one "wet" with the fecal matter and the absorption rate of the paper, transference can and does occur in a very fast time span.  This is why there is a proper procedure for medical people to undergo for "correct" handwashing protocols.
