Sorry, but I disagree with your comment about it being normal for a period to restart within a week after you have stopped.

The normal monthly cycles are every 28 days or so.  Periods should come regularly every month, if the pattern changes, then that means there is a problem somewhere.  Hence it is always best to keep a written record of menstrual cycles and if the irregular periods persist for 3 months, then that is the time to see your doctor.

Sometimes a woman can get pregnant and not know, and that can start a bleed after a week.

its very normal for a period to restart within a week after you have stoopped. and if you are really not sexually active, that could mean that your hormones just stored up for awhile. have you noticed hot flashes or a "blah" feeling

When your menstrual cycle pattern starts to change, this is highly likely to be hormonal.  On the other hand, because you say that your diet is "not as  good as it should be" you may be anaemic.  With anaemia, that too can make the menstrual cycles to become irregular, either too heavy or scant or complete loss of periods.  If you have been feeling very tired, then it is highly likely that you have anaemia, and in this case you should make an appointment to see your doctor soon and not wait 2-3 months (see my message below with regard to your periods).

Any changes to the menstrual cycle that are not related to pregnancy are not normal.

I suggest you keep a written diary for the next 2 or 3 months to record your menstrual cycle and also jot down any mood swings which can sometimes happen about 10 days before a period.  Also keep a note of any changes like tender breasts, fluid retention as well as exactly how your periods are - light, brown, pink show, heavy, clotty and so on.

All these will help give a picture to your doctor should you need to see him if your periods do not start to be "normal" again.

The other thing is, are you sure that the blood is coming from your vagina?  If you have an infection in the bladder that can cause bleeding to come with your pee depending on how severe the infection is.  If you are not sure where the blood is coming from, you can check it by pressing a white tissue paper against your vaginal opening.  A bladder infection is called Cystitis and this can cause pain in the belly and the lower back and sometimes a burning sensation when you urinate.  If you find that the blood is in fact coming when you pee, you will need to make an appointment to see your doctor urgently and take a urine sample with you.  In any event you need to drink plenty of fluids and especially water.  2 litres of water a day are usually recommended, but more if you sweat a lot.

I do not know much about HIV, but would have thought any problems would have shown up much sooner than 10 years.  As you are concerned about this, it is always a good idea to go to the GUM clinic to get checked  out and to put your mind at rest.  GUM clinics are confidential.  As I do not know which country you live, you may find information about GUM clinics in the telephone director or on the web to one in your area (you may already know where your GUM clinic is).

With regard to your irregular periods zymzym, because you are aged 50 years of age you are highly likely to be on the change of life.  Your doctor can do a blood test to check your hormone levels to confirm this.  Being on the change can take many years before that phase in a woman's life is complete, but in any event even with no periods for a year or so, would not guarantee not getting pregnant with not using any type of contraception when being sexually active.

Best wishes

I am 50 years of age so I know a few things. Irregular periods are not uncommon.  My cycle begins for 3 days...goes away completely for 2 or more days and then starts again to complete a 5-7 day cycle.  Go to the doctor if it lasts more than 8-10 days or if you have pains other than your normal menstrual cramps.  It is always better to know. Even if you are inactive now you seem to be saying that there is history.  Take a deep breath and get the HIV test.  Peace and be well jenny130012.
