Taste buds on tongue?

Okay, this is really weird and I'm not sure even how to explain it so bear with me.

The best way I can paint a picture is to say this - you know how when you brush your teeth, your tongue gets a layer of tooth paste on it? Or maybe when you're eating something and your tongue ends up colored? Well, this happened to me, except there's a circle in the back that doesn't have it. There's just a spot missing and what looks like part of a taste bud hanging off? I have a compulsion to skin pick so part of me wants to pull the hanging bit off. Gross, I know.

I'm not sure what I could have done to damage my tongue like this. It's never hurt, but it could be possible that I bit my tongue in my sleep or something. The spot is about the size of a back molar. It looks just like my normal tongue, it just doesn't have any color when I eat food that would stain the tongue, or toothpaste film from brushing. I can see taste buds there still, there's just three that are in that area that seem bigger, this includes the one that's hanging.

Does anyone have a clue what this could be? And if I did damage it by biting or perhaps a crunchy food, how long would it take to heal?

While brushing my tongue today I noticed there are some taste buds in the back that look enlarged.

It's a special mouthwash to fight gingivitis. It's been a week so far, and I have to use it for 30 days. I can't go back in, can't afford to. I can call and see what they say, but unless they're going to do a no-charge eval I can't go in.

It wouldn't hurt to have your dentist take a look at it, or your regular physician. They can probably tell at a glance whether it anything to worry about. Wondering who gave you the mouthwash, and why you are using it? and why there is a time limit of three weeks? I'm confused.

Hm. I think so, judging by pictures on google that aren't so severe. I have been using a special mouthwash that has alcohol in it and some other chemicals to fight off gingivitis. How long will this take to go away? I still have to use this mouthwash for another three weeks.

Perhaps this might be a mild case of geographic tongue which causes map-like patches on the tongue.  The cause of geographic tongue is not known however some causes that may result in this condition include vitamin B deficiency, inflammation caused by spicy, acidic or hot foods, irritation to alcohol.

I can't edit, so I would like to clarify - it almost looks raw, like skin is missing but there is still texture there similar to the rest of my taste buds. I think I did damage it somehow.
