My husband died of cyrrhosis; why did he get childish then attack me?

After all the emergency room visits - the paracenteses, the banding of his varices, the spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, his last stage was so awful. What happened with the fury?  He SCREAMED at me - in the hospital - the most vulgar vicious words that destroyed me.  Can anyone explain the ammonia or whatever made him treat me that way?

Yes, Talkybox is correct. Ammonia was why my boyfriend acted very badly and assaulted me. He almost killed us while driving my car too close the center of the road. I was screaming at him to get in the center, but I believe he thought he was in the center. Finally, he pulled over and I drove. I'm sorry your loss, you must be hurting. I'll pray for you..

It could also be a reaction to the various medicines that were in his system during the treatment.

My Mother had cirhossis. The last few years were the hardest. We thought she had the onset of dementia. All along it was hepatic encephalopathy. Her personality changed; she, too, was very cruel. She, at times, had no filter and was nearly impossible to be around.

The liver is a filter. Think of cirhossis as 'bad plumbing'. When ammonia, and other toxins build up, it causes changes like confusion, memory loss, fatigue, flapping hand tremor, sleepiness, bad breath from liver disease, irritability, or slurred speech.

Often times I wondered if she had any control over what she said. She was a good Mom, but she had a mean streak. Unfortunately,  her bad side came out in the end.
